Is Santa Real? – A Letter Explaining Santa Claus To Your Kids

Looking to answer the question “IS SANTA REAL?” to your kids? Here’s the most perfect and beautiful response to give.

Let’s chat about the question: Is Santa real?

I should preface this post by saying that I never actually asked my own parents the big all-important question:

Is Santa Real?

For most of my childhood, I believed in him wholeheartedly.

Then one day it seemed as if the veil of my innocence was lifted and I knew the truth without anyone having to tell me.

Is Santa Real?

The truth which was this:

Santa and the spirit of Christmas does indeed exist in so many ways, though he may not come down the chimney as we are traditionally led to believe as youngsters.

With two children of my own, I dreaded the day when I would be asked this same question because I am such a big Christmas person.

I love the magical feeling of Christmas.

I love the excitement surrounding gift-giving and gift-receiving.

With the expectation that the question would one day come true, I prepared a copy of a letter which perfectly and succinctly provides children an answer to this question:

Is Santa Claus real?

The original author of this letter is Martha Brockenbrough who wrote this response back in 2009 after her daughter Lucy gave her a note asking:

“I NEED TO KNOW, ARE YOU SANTA? TELL ME THE TRUTH.”

Yep, written in capitals to emphasize her desperate need for an answer.

I absolutely love her mom’s response, which I will share with you below.

Amazingly my own kids never asked me the “Is Santa Real?” question until they were around 12 – I believe mainly out of fear of having the magical bubble popped.

Mine – not theirs!

For some reason their crazy mom (that is, me!) has this fervent need to keep the spirit of believing in things you can’t see alive.

And if truth be known, I think it would hurt me more to say these words out loud than it would hurt my kids to hear them.

Yet when the day eventually comes (though I like to think I missed this bullet) I will have this letter ready and waiting for them.

Without further ado, here is a beautiful letter for kids answering the question: Is Santa Real?

Is Santa Real?

Dear                 ,

Thank you for your letter. You asked a very good question: “Are you Santa?”

I know you have wanted the answer to this question for a long time, and I’ve had to give it careful thought to know just what to say.

The answer is no.

I am not Santa.

There is no one single Santa.

I am the person who fills your stockings with presents, though.

I also choose and wrap the presents under the tree, the same way my mom did for me, and the same way her mom did for her and you will do for your kids someday.

This could never make any of us Santa though.

Santa is lots of and lots of people who keep the spirit of Christmas alive.

He lives in our hearts – not at the North Pole.

Santa is the magic and love and spirit of giving to others.

What he does is teach children to believe in something they can’t see or touch.

Throughout your life you will need this capacity to believe: in yourself, in your family, in your friends and in God.

You will need to be able to believe in things you can’t measure or hold in your hands.

Now you know the secret of how he gets down all of those chimneys on Christmas Eve: he has help from all of the people whose hearts he has filled with joy.

With full hearts, people like me take our turns helping Santa do a job that would otherwise be impossible.

So no, I am not Santa.

Santa is love and magic and hope and happiness.

I am on his team, and now you are too.

I love you and I always will.

Mom
