Respect Parents -11 Ways to Let Your Parents Know You Care

Want to show respect parents? Here are 11 ways to show your parents that you love and appreciate all they do.

Let’s chat about respect for your parents.

Now that you’re older and wiser, you may have noticed that your relationship with your parents has changed (which is totally normal, might I add!).

The goal however is for the change to be for the BETTER (not worse) and hopefully you have managed to maintain close and loving relationships with your parents.

Even though you probably don’t live in each other’s pockets like you did when you were kids, there are still things you can do to maintain a close and positive connection.

Try these ideas to enrich your relationship with your parents:

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 1 – Keep in close contact with your parents.

Do you know how EASY this is to do?

It doesn’t need to be as complicated as some people make it out to be.

Make the effort to call, text, or email your parents regularly (my vote is for the old fashioned option which is calling).

This is easy enough to do!

Just pick the phone and make a quick call whenever you get the chance.

TIP # 2 – Spend quality time with them.

One step above the phone call is paying your parents a visit.

If you have the time, turn off the television and visit your parents instead.

Use this time to connect with your parents again.

Ask them questions.

Speak to them about everything that is going on in their life.

What are they up to?

How do they spend their days?

What are they enjoying?

What are they enjoying not so much?

Take the time to also share what is going on in YOUR life.

What are you up to?

How have you been spending your time?

Do you have any special news to share with them?

You can also share some funny stories about your work or the kids.

Please don’t think this stuff is too boring to share.

Often it is the simple stuff that is most interesting to your parents.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 3 – Offer to help them with things they need done.

Do your parents need help with anything?

You won’t know unless you ask.

Chances are there are plenty of things that you can do to help your parents.

Maybe you could offer to fix something for them, paint, mow the yard, clean the house, or cook a meal.

As they age, they will no longer be the super tough and resilient parents you imagined them to be.

If required you can also install grab bars or other accessibility tools to help keep your parents safe.

Remember you won’t know what they need help with unless you ask.

TIP # 4 – Treat them to lunch or dinner.

You don’t have to wait for holidays or birthdays to take your parents out to eat.

You can make any day special with the gift of a meal at their favorite restaurant.

Remember life is short and the years pass WAY too quickly.

Do these things now while you still have the chance.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 5 – Send them a card.

Want a simple tip that will make your parents so happy?

It involves getting your parents a greeting card and writing loving words in it that show how much you care.

Do you know how easy it is to buy a gift card for your parents and pop it in the mail?

It is super easy.

You don’t have to overthink the message either.

What are you grateful for?

What beautiful memories do you have of your childhood with them?

Don’t think it has to be super lengthy.

If you have writer’s block, sometimes just saying the words “hey, I love you guys” is enough.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 6 – Write a tribute to your parents on the internet using a social media site.

Not everyone will adopt this idea but if you have parents who are savvy enough to work out Facebook they will LOVE this idea.

Let your friends and family know how much your parents mean to you by sharing a sweet post about them.

Make sure to include a nice picture of them, too.

There is something special about spreading the word that your parents are much appreciated by you.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 7 – If arguments arise, remain calm.

Even in the happiest of families, there can be arguments.

If a discussion becomes heated, remember to take a deep breath and stay calm and collected.

Give yourself a moment to think before you speak.

Your parents are human too.

They will make mistakes.

They will say careless words at times.

They are not perfect and neither are you.

Be willing to forgive them for their imperfections.

TIP # 8 – Treat them to a weekend getaway.

Think of all the helpful things your parents have done for you over the years.

Maybe they gave you a warm bed to sleep with, fed you well, loved and nurtured you in the way they thought was best, sent you to a good school and did the best they could with the resources they had.

It is definitely an option to say a big thank you for all those things by treating your parents to a weekend getaway.

You could send them on a short cruise or pre-book a night away in a lovely local hotel.

If cost is a factor, you may even ask for your siblings to help and pitch in for this gift.

When the cost is shared, it is so much easier to treat your parents to a weekend somewhere nice.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 9 – Thank them for all they have done for you.

Sure it is nice to gift your parents with a weekend away but sometimes saying two words out loud will also suffice just as well.

Those two words are THANK YOU.

Sometimes parents don’t feel that they are appreciated, so remember from time to say the words OUT LOUD that show you appreciate them and all they do for you.

RESPECT PARENTS

TIP # 10 – Bring them a beautiful plant for their garden.

This is a nice gesture, especially when you plant it for them.

Plant it outside a window where they can see it clearly.

A rose bush or other showy plant works well for this type of gift.

A plant that attracts hummingbirds or butterflies is especially nice.

TIP # 11 – Bake them a special cake or dessert.

Food is always a nice offering for your parents.

Surprise your parents with a delicious dessert!

Bake for them your favorite treat.

All in all we need to remember that our parents are important to us, and your relationship with them can affect other areas of your life.

You can utilize these tips to let your parents know how much you appreciate them in your life.

There is so much good that can come out of letting people know you love them.

Your relationship with your parents will benefit, your family’s relationship with your parents will be richer, and you’ll be demonstrating healthy relationship tips that your kids will incorporate into their own lives.
