Pros And Cons Of Social Media – 15 Things To Consider

Wondering what the pros and cons of social media are? Here are 15 things to consider when it comes to social media.

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of social media…

So, I’m not sure what your feelings are on social media but one thing is true: social media is here to stay.

Whether you care for it or not, the reality is people generally spend a lot of time on these platforms and these platforms make way too much money for it to not remain a big part of our society.

Now for the good and bad news: while social media can provide a lot of benefits, it can also be detrimental.

Social media is in fact a powerful force that can be used to enhance or damage your life.

Yep, it can potentially harm your physical and emotional health. So, let’s look at both sides, so you can determine for yourself if, when, and how you want to use social media from hereon.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Consider the following benefits of using social media:

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

1 – Stay in touch with friends and family.

This main benefit of social media is definitely near the top.

Social media does make it super easy to stay in contact with the important people in your life.

You can exchange messages, videos, and photos with multiple people with ease and feel instantly connected to others.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

2 – Battle loneliness.

Loneliness is a common affliction, especially among the elderly.

Social media therefore provides the lonely with a convenient way to connect with others.

3 – Develop contacts.

Whether you’re looking for a mentor, clients for your business, friends, people interested in the same hobby, or people you can collaborate with in business, social media can be a great help.

I especially love all the Facebook groups for business owners and bloggers.

I have made some great friends from all around the world via these groups.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

4 – Communication is much faster.

Remember the days you had to call EVERYONE to share with them some special news.

Nowadays writing one post is way faster than 30 phone calls.

At the very least, you can reach all of your friends and family with one communication and the message can be shared in exactly the way you want it to be.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

5 – Greater reach.

With a simple post or tweet, you can potentially reach millions of people instantly (this is especially true if you are using Facebook ads).

You can address people that live thousands of miles away that you’ve never even met before and still potentially impact their life.

6 – Show off your talents.

Are you a fantastic singer?

Amazing artist?

Do you tell the funniest jokes?

Can you train a dog to stand on his head?

Social media provides a platform for sharing your talents with the world.

7 – Boost your income.

It’s not easy, but there are a lot of people that make a lot of money from social media as influencers or selling their products via ads.

Social media can be a great way to find customers, sell your product or services, or just make money from ad revenue.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

8 – Learning opportunities.

I know it’s hard to believe that YouTube can be educational but I have changed my opinion on this since my son started watching some really cool educational channels on YouTube.

Not only are these shows educational, but they are also free.

You would be surprised at the sort of things you can learn on YouTube – anything from learning to cook, gardening, home maintenance, fixing things, breeding animals, playing the guitar and so much more.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Now for the bad stuff! There are obviously several drawbacks to using social media. Here they are:

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

9 – Anxiety.

It’s become common knowledge that social media use can lead to increased anxiety.

Fear of missing out is one of the main causes of anxiety in social media users.

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

10 – Addiction.

Any social media platform you enjoy using can potentially become an addiction.

We have seen kids get addicted to these screens and it’s just as likely to happen with adults.

The creators of these sites know exactly how to keep your interest piqued.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

11 – Depression.

Social media users often report depressive symptoms.

This comes back to FOMO and the comparison game.

When everyone else’s life seems so idyllic (at least in their photos), it can make your own life pale in comparison.

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

12 – Reduced productivity.

Social media use robs you of time and productivity.

I mean, if you are spending time on social media, it’s obviously taking you away from other things you could be doing.

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

13 – Substitute for face-to-face contact.

Once upon a time, we needed to catch up with friends face-to-face or pick up the phone in order to really know what was going on for them.

But with the advent of social media, the need isn’t really there anymore.

People now spend less time with actual in-the-flesh humans, because social media provides a substitute that feels real and valuable, but often isn’t.

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

14 – Social media can waste a lot of time.

It needs to be said: social media use can suck up a lot of your time and attention.

If this is the case for you, please know that there are apps you can use on your phone or internet browser that will track your time.

Try one and keep track of your social media time if you can.

You might be surprised by what you discover (if it’s excessive make it your goal to count back the time you spend on Facebook and Instagram).

CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

15 – Privacy concerns.

Last but not least, identity theft criminals use social media to mine personal information.

It also provides a tool for stalkers to keep an eye on their victims, and burglars to know when you’re out of town.

So be aware.

None of us like to think about this but be mindful and protect yourself at all times.

PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

So, there you have it. I’ve listed for you both the pros and cons of social media.

You may decide that it is still worth checking into on a regular basis as long as you don’t allow it to take control of your life.

Because it CAN cause more harm than good if you’re not careful!

So, just be mindful and do your best to get the most from social media without it negatively impacting your life.

It can be a great addition to your life if used wisely and you are ultimately in control of your usage.
