Now, one of the ironies of modern life is that we sometimes spend more time being connected with our technology, Internet and devices, and yet, as a result of this obsession with our phones etc. we sometimes wind up being less present for each other.

Isn’t that weird?

Maybe you’re in the same room with a group of your friends or your family, but each you is busy texting or talking on your phones.

Maybe you’re sitting down to a family dinner, but your mind is still back at the office or looking ahead to the chores you need to do this weekend. You are there but hey, let’s be honest, you aren’t REALLY there.

If you feel like you’re missing out on something in your relationships, you could be right.

Here’s the thing…Relationships are more fulfilling when you are prepared to give others your full attention and share the real you.

The real authentic you, flaws and all.

Try these ideas for becoming more mindful in your personal and professional interactions.

Being More Attentive:

RELATIONSHIP GOALS TIPS

1 – Slow down.

Okay my friend, I have to tell you that you won’t win any prizes for trying to speed up and race life.

Sometimes you need to JUST SLOW DOWN.

Take your mind off your to do list and become more aware of what’s going on around you.

The best way to do this well is to build some down time into each day to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

2 – Stop multitasking.

Studies show that our brains can only focus on one thing at a time, for the most part.

Let that be the individual you’re talking with rather than thinking you can have a real, genuine conversation with someone while staring at your phone at the same time.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

3 – Set priorities.

Make your days more manageable by setting priorities.

You can start by striking any tasks off your list that give you little in return or little satisfaction.

Devote your time and energies instead to the activities that you find meaningful and that bring you joy.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

4 – Turn off your phone.

I cannot think of a more important tip to offer you than this…Try to create some technology-free zones if you want to strengthen your relationships and make them more meaningful.

You can make it a rule to turn your phone off at meals or at least silence the volume if you’re expecting an urgent call.

Stay off the internet for at least an hour before bed and spend that time instead with the people you love the most.

Test this out today and see the difference it makes in your relationships when you are spending more quality time with your loved ones.

5 – Listen closely.

When conversing with others, it is soooooooo important to show people that you care about what they have to say.

You can do this by listening actively – yes take the time to REALLY LISTEN, acknowledge what they have to say by nodding and offering appropriate comments and questions at the right time.

Be PRESENT with the people you love.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

6 – Make eye contact.

News flash: You communicate with your eyes just as well as your words.

Take the time to actually look at the person who is talking to you.

Really look at them in the eyes.

Does it feel a bit awkward for you because you haven’t done it in so long?

If so, if you feel awkward, try rotating your gaze between someone’s eyes and mouth every 5 to 10 seconds while you’re talking.

You will get better at this with practice.

Being More Authentic:

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

7 – Clarify your purpose.

If you want others to know you, it’s important to understand yourself.

What is your purpose here on Earth?

What do you think you were put on this planet to achieve?

What is most important to you?

WHO is most important to you?

Relationship goals

Identify what matters to you and what you want out of life.

You can’t really love anyone else well until you learn to love yourself first.

And you can’t understand others until you understand YOU first either.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

8 – Trust your intuition.

If you have to listen to anything today, listen to your intuition.

Listen to what your body is silently telling you.

How often do you actually listen to your inner voice?

I want you to today let your inner wisdom guide you towards making decisions that are appropriate for you.

Trust that inner voice because it wants the best for you!

9 – Ask for help.

Here’s another thing – sometimes we will need help in life but our ego will prevent us from feeling brave enough to ask for it.

Be willing to ask for support and assistance anyway when you need it.

To do this well, tell others what you need, whether it’s encouragement or an extra hand with doing the yard work.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

It honestly is a strength and not a weakness to be vulnerable, open and honest in this way.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

10 – Provide validation.

People also need validation from their loved ones and peers.

You can do this by communicating your acceptance and acknowledgement.

Let them know you hear what they are saying.

Even when you disagree with what they are saying, you can still show others that their opinions and feelings are valid and worthwhile.

Try to see a situation from their perspective.

Can you at least try to do this?

See the situation from someone else’s viewpoint?

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and show some compassion and empathy.

This is a skill that isn’t too hard to develop when your heart is in the right place.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

11 – Express gratitude.

Gratitude is the best attitude we can have.

Take the time to remember what you have to be thankful for.

Keep a gratitude journal noting all the things you have to be grateful for in life and start by telling others about the positive impact they have on your life.

They will appreciate hearing your words and you will appreciate saying them.

Don’t just think them – you need to say them out loud too.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

12 – Extend forgiveness.

It’s time for the F word now – FORGIVENESS.

This really is the most powerful F word around.

Do your best to let go of past resentments and disappointments.

Focus instead on the positive aspects of your relationships and resolve to let go of past grievances and move forward.

You’ll feel so much more peaceful and happier inside.

Forgiveness is like letting go of a heavy bag you are carrying and realising it feels so much lighter to walk around without it.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS

13 – Hold deep conversations.

Be open to moving beyond the silly small talk with your family and friends.

You are capable of having deeper more meaningful conversations my friend.

When you reveal personal information about yourself, you give others the opportunity to be more vulnerable too.

People will also love and appreciate these deep conversations.

What do you think deep inside your heart?

What are some things you would love to discuss?

Find friends who are open to exploring philosophical and spiritual subjects.

You won’t know unless you ask!

14 – Engage in challenging activities.

Research shows that married couples who work on new and demanding tasks together tend to have increased satisfaction with their relationship.

So, what is something new and challenging that you can do together?

Can you sign up for cooking classes, do some dance lessons or learn a new sport like tennis or squash.

If it sounds like it would be challenging for you as a couple, then it might actually be worth giving it a try.

Be willing to step outside your comfort zone.

That is where all the amazing stuff lies.

Relationship goals

In the end, there are so many rewards that come from being fully attentive and authentic with your friends and loved ones.

When you consciously aim to reduce the distractions that come between you and those around you, you’ll quickly change the dynamics of your relationships so that you feel more centered and loved.

I promise, your relationships are worth investing your time and energy into.

Give some of these strategies a try today.

Your family will be so grateful that you did.

Much love,
