Declutter Challenge – How To Declutter When Overwhelmed
If you want a declutter challenge, I have the PERFECT challenge for you. This will make it easy for you to declutter!
Let’s chat today about doing a declutter challenge.
If you want to know how to start decluttering when overwhelmed, you are exactly in the right place.
You know what the real problem usually is with getting organized? We simply have too much stuff! It’s true right?
Most of our clutter is just really stuff we don’t need anymore.
I’m willing to bet you have some things you (or someone you live with) keep without having a good enough reason.
So why DO we keep so much stuff?
The thing is, it’s easier to find excuses for why you should keep something and delay making a decision rather than making a firm (and sometimes difficult) choice to say goodbye to your “stuff.”
This is exactly what keeps us stuck.
So we need to examine our reasons closely and see them for the excuses that they actually are.
Here are my five favorite excuses…

QUESTION THIS THOUGHT:
1 – “I might need it someday.”
Sure, you might.
But really what are the chances of that happening?
The thing is most of the items we keep can easily be found or replaced within a day or two.
If you really need it, you could go out and borrow another one with ease.
Lots of men (my dad included) keep every screw and nail created and store it away like a squirrel with his nuts.
Seriously his garage is filled with everything he has ever picked up in the past with this idea that he might “need” it one day.
But that day has never come over the last 40 years.
So how much longer do you want to hold onto it for?
Are you planning to take it with you to the grave?
What happens is these little tiny items create more and more clutter.
It happens in a slow and sneaky way until it gets to a point where you can’t find that little screw anyway because it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
Don’t let this happen to you.
If you don’t really see a need for it in the immediate future learn to LET IT GO.

QUESTION THIS THOUGHT:
2 – “I’m going to lose some weight and start wearing this again.”
I’m putting up my hand here to say I used to have so many gorgeous clothes that simply didn’t fit me anymore.
But I wasn’t willing to let them go.
Of course if you have a goal to lose some weight, you should do everything in your power to make it happen.
And when you do, I give you permission to go out and find a sale and buy some brand-new clothes.
I got rid of so many of my smaller clothes when I realized that even if I regained my pre-kids and young adult body, the clothes I was holding onto were definitely not the ones I would be first reaching for in my wardrobe.
Would you really still want to wear it then?
Is it still your style?
Have you outgrown that style even if you were able to fit it?
Be honest with yourself and acknowledge that a slimmer body may be the perfect time to reward yourself with some new clothes that perfectly match WHO YOU ARE TODAY (and not five or ten years ago)

QUESTION THIS THOUGHT:
3 – “So-and-So Gave Me This.”
I’m all for keeping memories and items that remind us of people we love.
But the truth is, memories are not in the clutter, the knick-knacks and “stuff” you have shoved in a box.
Your memories exist ONLY IN YOUR MIND.
Let that sink in for a moment.
It’s the truth right?
I won’t say get rid of everything as I have kept a few mementos from my past and it’s not always an easy decision to part with something a loved one who has since passed gave you.
But you really can’t keep everything and anything without swimming in clutter.
Try and just keep the special things you cherish.
You get to decide what those special things are but make sure you are holding onto them not out of a sense of guilt but pride.
And get them out in the open, on display – where you can enjoy them and have a story to tell when someone comments or asks a question about the item.

QUESTION THIS THOUGHT:
4 – I paid good money for this…”thing!”
Oh gosh. I used to hold onto things for this very reason.
I’m sure you did. I did too.
But the thing is, what has more value…this “item” you no longer have any use for or the way you enjoy your house?
Just because I spent so much on something in the past, does that mean I have to pay that price FOREVER?
What’s more important to you now:
The item…or your happiness?
The item… or your space?

DECLUTTER CHALLENGE
QUESTION THIS THOUGHT:
5 – Oh, I’m just trying to figure out what to do with it…
We think that indecision serves us but really it doesn’t.
Just decide.
Maybe it’s not worth holding onto.
Maybe it isn’t.
But which is it?
If it takes you that much mental work to figure out what to do with something, I’m going to guess that maybe it isn’t worth as much to you as you think.
If you can’t figure out what to do with something…it’s a safe bet you won’t miss it too much.
All in all, there is a lot more value in enjoying your home, your friends and your family than the “stuff” you paid for.
Your home is your safe space.
And a clear and tidy home equals a clear and tidy mind.
You can just decide now:
I’m willing to let things go.
I’m willing to do what it takes to have a home that’s clear of clutter.
I will create a home that is only filled with things I love and that have a purpose.
Best of luck with your decluttering my friend.
Much love,
Frances xx
