At Home Workout Tips For Beginners – 3 Ways To Stay Motivated

Starting an at home workout? Here are 3 great ways for beginners to stay consistently motivated for at home workouts.

Let’s chat about at home workouts for beginners.

I have always intuitively understood how hard it is for some people to squeeze in exercise after a long day of work.

But that’s only because I have felt their pain.

If you work in a job which entails you getting home late, after sitting in traffic for over an hour or you are a SAHM or WAHM who simply feels mentally and physically exhausted from the day’s work, the fatigue is real.

The first thing you want to do when you get home from work or grab a break is put up your feet.

The last thing you want to do is slip on some trainers and get back up again.

Chances are you genuinely feel as if you don’t have the time, energy or the motivation to exercise.

But here’s the thing.

We do have time and we do spend it on other things like running to the grocery store, taxiing our kids to extracurricular activities and doing a hobnob of other things that we don’t particular care to do when we are tired.

We do things all the time that we don’t really feel like doing…like going to work, attending meetings, being nice to people who we know deep down aren’t nice etc.

Somewhere, somehow we need to make sure that exercise fits in and gets slotted back onto that priority list.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like doing it but like grocery shopping, it is essential to your physical and mental health and it shouldn’t be left off your to-do list.

Yes your life is busy.

Everyone’s life is busy.

Yes it’s hard to get to the gym to exercise.

That’s okay – let me tell you a secret.

You can exercise just as effectively right from the comfort of your own home.

I cannot tell you how many freebie exercise videos there are on YouTube right now for you to watch…dare I say THOUSANDS!

So you have no excuses to not exercise now, right?

But let me guess…the issue was never really about HOW TO EXERCISE but rather how to stay motivated enough to do it consistently.

Why Home Workouts Are Difficult

If you can ever get to the gym (not just buy a gym membership but actually GET to the gym) you will notice that they are built to be spaces where people of all goals and fitness levels can gather together and motivate each other.

For some, this can be intimidating, but for many, seeing others exercising and working hard can be a great source of motivation.

In your home gym, you don’t have examples of fitness inspiration walking around to motivate you.

For this reason, it’s important to find unique ways to motivate yourself.

Maintaining Your Motivation for Home Workouts

When working out at home, your biggest challenge is staying on track and progressing towards your goals.

Keep in mind that any goal that you set – whether it’s building muscle or losing weight – will take time.

This is not a week-long event.

You’ll need to stay motivated over the course of many months.

Remember what they say about putting in the work:

It takes 4 weeks for you to notice a change.

It takes 8 weeks for your family and friends to notice.

It takes 12 weeks for the rest of the world to notice.

Stay consistent, keep your head held up high and three months from now, you will thank yourself.

Yes it’s a slow process but quitting won’t speed it up.

This month’s choices are next month’s body.

So, the big question remains: “How can I stay motivated for the long term?”

Try these ideas to keep you motivated to achieve your fitness goals while working out from home:

TIP 1 # Change it up.

This is one of the easiest methods to stay motivated.

If you’re continually doing the same workout (or series of workouts), you may find that you get bored very quickly (unless you LOVE whatever program you are doing).

Additionally, having no variability in your training will make your progress much slower. It’s good for your muscles to switch things up a bit.

  • If you are the type to get bored with your home workouts, do yourself a favor and keep your mind open for new and unique workouts.
  • Follow your favorite fitness trainers on social media.
  • Chances are they will post workout routines that you can follow along with and see faster results.
  • You can also search for Tabata workouts – these are so cool!
  • A simple Tabata workout is 4 minutes long (minus the warm up and cool down) and includes 20 seconds of high intensity training followed by 10 seconds of rest. This cycle is repeated 8 times for a total 4 minute workout but it’s intense, lots of cardio and let me repeat – ONLY FOUR MINUTES LONG.

TIP # 2 – Grab a suspension tool.

Suspension tools like a Monkii or a TRX are great ways to always have a source of fun and engaging exercise.

Pushups and lunges can get boring very quickly, and suspension tools have a huge amount of online videos with exercises for beginners all the way to advanced.

  • When you make the exercise fun and interactive, you’ll be more motivated to exercise and stay on track. Suspension tools can help with that!

TIP 3 # – Make time.

When I was younger and working long days as a production coordinator at a recording studio, I would be out the door by 7:45am in the mornings for a prompt 8:30am start and return home no earlier than 6:45pm (if I finished exactly at 6pm…but let’s be honest, often we would be busy and run late).

One would think that left zero time for working out but back then fitness was a real priority for me (I didn’t have any kids yet who sat higher up on the priority scale).

So guess what?

I woke up every morning at 5:30am and no joke I did one hour Elle MacPherson video (yes still VHS) right there in my living room.

I absolutely loved that workout.

It was so fun and made me feel amazing (I just checked and that original VHS is still rated 5 stars on Amazon – nothing less. I knew it was a great one!)

Anyway 5:30am worked for me back then.

You need to work out what is best for you.

See how you can integrate your home workouts into your daily schedule.

Understandably, there will be days where you don’t want to train but having your workouts locked into your schedule and seeing them as an important, NON-NEGOTIABLE element of your life will ensure you prioritize the workout.

  • Hint: You’re more likely to follow through on training sessions when your workout time is on your regular schedule at the same time each day, or the same days each week.
  • Making it a habit will get you to automatically work out without having to make the decision to do it.

Are At Home Workouts for You?

Let’s be real.

Home workouts aren’t for everyone.

Many people enjoy the setting of the gym and find that training at home is difficult.

I’m the opposite.

I like not having to waste 15 minutes prepping to leave for the gym (aka organizing the kids for while I’m gone) and then 15 minutes driving there and 15 minutes driving back.

In those 45 minutes I could have easily done a good workout at home.

If you’re the type of person that can self-motivate and plan your days ahead of time, please check out the option of home workouts.

Not only are they a great space to develop your relative strength, but training at home is cost-efficient, time-saving, and a great way to connect with yourself.

Win, win, win for me and hopefully for you too!
