Why Do People Procrastinate (The Real Truth)
Want to know why do people procrastinate on taking action in life? Here is the real truth and root of their procrastination problems.
Let’s chat about why do people procrastinate.
Have you ever wonder why people do things that literally self-sabotage their best efforts?
Procrastination is actually a common behavior that involves delaying or postponing tasks, even when we know that doing so may lead to negative consequences.
We know it is bad and yet we still do it anyway.
Here’s why. Let me list for you the most common factors contribute to why people procrastinate:
Lack of Motivation:
Let’s just be honest with ourselves for a moment. Sometimes we just don’t want to do the task at hand.
When individuals lack motivation or a clear sense of purpose, they may struggle to initiate tasks. Without a compelling reason to start, procrastination becomes more likely. Like duh…this makes a lot of sense, right?
WHY DO PEOPLE PROCRASTINATE
Fear of Failure:
Then we have the other issue where we think we are just going to do a bad thing at the task so why even bother?
The fear of not meeting expectations or failing at a task can be a powerful deterrent. This fear will stop you in your tracks.
Procrastination may serve as a defense mechanism to avoid the possibility of failure and the associated negative emotions.
Perfectionism:
Individuals with perfectionistic tendencies may delay tasks because they fear they won’t be able to complete them perfectly. They figure if I can’t do it perfectly I may as well not do it at all. Except where is the logic in that?
The desire for flawless results can definitely be paralyzing and lead to procrastination.

WHY DO PEOPLE PROCRASTINATE
Poor Time Management:
The inability to manage time effectively can contribute to procrastination. We think we have all the time in the world to do the task (when really we don’t).
Or we think we can do it in a shorter span when in reality it may take 2 or 3 times longer. People may underestimate the time required for a task, leading them to postpone it until the last minute.
Lack of Self-Discipline:
Procrastination often involves a struggle with self-discipline. It’s back to this idea of having to do something that we really don’t want to do. Individuals may give in to short-term pleasures (e.g., watching TV, browsing social media) instead of focusing on long-term goals.
WHY DO PEOPLE PROCRASTINATE
Task Aversion:
Some tasks are inherently unpleasant or anxiety-inducing. Just the idea of doing something that scares us or makes us feel anxious makes us want to run under the bed covers and hide. Individuals may procrastinate to avoid the discomfort associated with certain responsibilities.
Overwhelm:
When faced with a large or complex task, individuals may feel overwhelmed. I mean, can you imagine trying to eat an elephant in one bit? It’s impossible which is why we need to break our goals down into baby steps.
Procrastination can be a way of coping with the stress and something that happens when we don’t know how to break the task down into more manageable pieces.
Impaired Executive Function:
Executive functions, which include skills like planning, organizing, and initiating tasks, may also be impaired in some individuals. These are skills we develop over time and some of us have simply never taken the time to practice honing these skills. Procrastination can be a result of difficulties in these cognitive processes.

WHY DO PEOPLE PROCRASTINATE
Reward Delay:
Let me guess: if you had to take a pick between watching a movie or studying for an exam which one would you pick? Procrastination often involves choosing immediate rewards (e.g., relaxation, entertainment) over delayed rewards associated with completing a task.
The brain is wired to seek instant gratification and so it makes sense that we will feel pulled to do the things that give us immediate pleasure.
Lack of Clear Goals:
Do you know why it’s so important to get the task at hand complete in a timely manner? Why is this goal so important to you? If you haven’t taken the time to clearly spell this out for yourself, then there’s a chance that you won’t think your tasks are that important to you.
Without clear goals or a roadmap for achieving them, individuals may struggle to prioritize tasks and may be more prone to procrastination.
WHY DO PEOPLE PROCRASTINATE
So there you have it – the most common reasons why people procrastinate.
Understanding the reasons behind procrastination can be a crucial step in addressing and overcoming this behavior. The good news is YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO TAKE ACTION PROMPTLY rather than procrastinating on tasks forever.
Just go over the above list and decide what leads to you procrastinating in life. Developing better time management skills, breaking tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, setting realistic goals, and finding ways to increase motivation can all contribute to reducing procrastination.
