Embracing Life – 11 Ways To Intentionally Live Each Moment

Want to get better at embracing life? Here are 11 ways to begin living intentionally and with purpose every day.

Let’s chat about embracing life.

If you are looking for advice on how to embrace life and live more in the moment then you have come to the right place!

It really is difficult to enjoy life FULLY and at the highest level without being fully aware of the present moment.

This is because life can only be lived in the present.

EMBRACING LIFE

When we intentionally create space in our lives, we can intentionally decide what to fill it with. Cait Flanders

Often our minds are preoccupied with multiple things, none of which is occurring right now.

Weird right?

Conversely living with intention means saying no to the things that aren’t important to us so that we can say yes to what matters the most.

At its core, living intentionally is about determining your values and then using those values to define goals for your life.

If left to their own devices, our minds are very active and constantly attempting to break free to occupy themselves with the past, the future, and pure fantasy.

While it’s good to prepare for the future and learn from the past, focusing primarily on the present has many benefits.

Try these ways to live in the moment and be present with your life:

EMBRACING LIFE

TIP # 1 – Avoid worry.

Worrying can only happen when you look to the future and think about things that haven’t happened yet.

Worry is a waste of time.

You need to stop stressing over things you can’t control.

They say that 97% of the things we worry about don’t even happen so why worry in the first place?

If you are doing the best you can, then worrying won’t make it any better.

Keep your thoughts instead on your environment and your current activity.

You can’t worry if you leave the future alone.

Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere. English Proverb

Worry is using your imagination to create something you don’t want. Abraham Hicks

TIP # 2 – Avoid regret.

Regret arrives while thinking about the past.

The past is over and no longer exists.

You bring your past mistakes to life by thinking about them.

Let them go.

Making a big life change is pretty scary.

But do you know what’s even scarier?

Regret.

Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can’t build on it; it’s only good for wallowing in. Katherine Mansfield

Regret is a form of punishment itself. Nouman Ali Khan

TIP # 3 – Turn off electronic devices.

Cell phones, computers, iPods, and gaming systems distract from the present moment.

Find your enjoyment in your life rather than in an imaginary world or in frivolous communication.

TIP # 4 – Avoid multitasking.

Try doing one task at a time.

Current research is overwhelmingly in favor of single-tasking.

Some say the art of multi-tasking is the art of messing up several things at once.

You’ll find you perform the task faster and at a higher level.

Let multitasking be a thing of the past.

Single-tasking is much more conducive to living in the present.

The secret to multitasking is that it isn’t actually multitasking. It’s just extreme focus and organization. Joss Whedon

You’d think people would realize they’re bad at multitasking and would quit. But a cognitive illusion sets in, fueled in part by a dopamine-adrenaline feedback loop, in which multitaskers think they are doing great. Daniel Levitin

TIP # 5 – Eliminate unnecessary items.

Having too many possessions is more of a burden than an advantage.

Owning too many things results in a mess that clutters both your physical environment and your mind.

If you don’t need it, consider giving it away or selling it.

TIP # 6 – Forgive.

When you hold a grudge, the only one suffering is you!

Remember forgiveness isn’t approving what happened.

It is choosing instead to rise above it.

Anger is distracting and keeps you from enjoying the current moment.

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. Lewis B. Smeles

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Mahatma Gandhi

Forgiveness is just another name for freedom. Byron Katie

Forgiveness does not change the past but it does enlarge the future. Paul Lewis Boese

TIP # 7 – Go slowly and deliberately.

Rushing creates a unique type of anxiety.

Give yourself the time you need to enjoy the current activity.

Address one task at a time and give it your full attention.

TIP # 8 – Listen.

If someone is speaking to you, give them your full attention and participate in the conversation to the best of your ability.

Listening is an art that requires attention over talent, spirit over ego, others over self. Dean Jackson

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. Stephen R. Covey

When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new. Dalai Lama

TIP # 9 – Spend 5 minutes of each hour describing your environment.

Take 5 minutes and describe to yourself everything you see, hear, smell, and feel.

It’s an easy way to bring your mind back to the present moment and keep it there.

There’s no way to compete the exercise without being mindful.

TIP # 10 – Eat slowly and enjoy your food.

By eating slower, you’ll have the chance to enjoy your food more.

You’ll also eat less, which is a good thing for many of us.

Try eating an entire orange one piece at a time.

Go slowly and focus on the flavor of each section.

EMBRACING LIFE

TIP # 11- Under schedule.

Too many obligations results in a crowded schedule and time concerns.

It’s not easy to stay focused on the current task if you’re worried about being on time for the next one.

Leave space between your obligations.

A plan is what, a schedule is when. It takes both a plan and a schedule to get things done. Peter Turla

The great enemy of achievement is a schedule already full. Robert Breault

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities. Stephen Covey

EMBRACING LIFE

In the end, to truly live in the moment you need to do less and experience more.

Do your best to avoid missing out on your life and losing so much time to the past and the future.

Understand that living in the moment is a habit and a skill.

Indulging in worry and regret are also habits.

But guess what?

These are habits you can consciously work to nip in the bud.

And while it is tricky to live entirely in the moment every single second of every single day the truth is this:

Life is definitely more enjoyable and meaningful when your focus is on the PRESENT.

Right now.

Today.

This minute.

This second.

Because when it passes, it is gone forever.
