How to Stay Mentally Strong in a Messed-Up World
Let’s just say it plainly: the world feels a little f-ed up sometimes.
Sure, we could debate whether it’s really that bad or whether humans have always been this messy…
But even I – an eternal optimist – can admit there’s some truth to the statement.
You’d think we would’ve crossed war, inequality, cruelty, and common sense–defying behaviour off our global “Dumb Things To Continue Doing” list by now.
But alas… here we are.
So how exactly are we meant to stay mentally strong when life keeps throwing challenges our way?
And not the inspirational challenges that make us think, “Wow, go me!”
I’m talking about the draining ones – the “this sucks and I don’t know if I can cope” kind.
Here’s the thing most people don’t talk about:
Even people with perfectly ‘normal’ lives can feel mentally fragile.
You can have a supportive family, great job, loving partner, healthy kids, a stable upbringing – and STILL struggle.
Why?
Because all of us share one universal trait:
We have a human brain.
A human brain that:
- doubts us
- fears everything
- amplifies insecurities
- obsesses over perceived flaws
- predicts worst-case scenarios
- self-sabotages
- clings to comfort
- avoids change
- mistakes inaction for safety
Even people with every advantage in the world still experience anxiety, overwhelm, frustration, anger, stress, resentment, and fear – because they’re human.
Fun?
Not even a little.
But it’s the truth.
And here’s what else is true:
Mental strength isn’t a default setting.
No one pops out of the womb mentally tough.
It’s a skill we develop – often after walking through the fire first.
Most mentally strong people didn’t get there through ease.
They earned it through the blood, sweat, tears, disappointments, detours, heartbreaks, setbacks, and lessons they never asked for.
Which brings us to the real problem:
**We want mental strength…
But we avoid the very things that create it.**
And we can thank our primitive brain for that.
Our primitive brain’s job is simple:
- Seek pleasure
- Avoid pain
- Conserve energy
- Keep us “safe”
Back in caveman days, this wiring saved our lives.
Today, it works against us.
Instead of running from sabre-toothed tigers, we now run from:
- discomfort
- hard work
- difficult conversations
- new challenges
- unknown outcomes
- delayed gratification
We stay inside our comfort zones.
We overconsume dopamine hits from social media and junk food.
We avoid doing the hard thing because our brain whispers, “Rest. Hide. Wait. Later.”
Except doing nothing doesn’t make us feel better.
It makes us feel helpless.
Exhausted.
Stuck.
This is the great paradox of being human:
The thing you avoid is usually the thing that will set you free.
Want confidence?
Do the thing you’re scared of.
Want growth?
Walk into the discomfort.
Want inner peace?
Face the inner chaos.
Want clarity?
Take action, even imperfect action.
Want strength?
Move through the challenges instead of running from them.
And life is FULL of these weird contradictions:
- To conquer fear, you must face fear.
- To succeed, you must fail repeatedly.
- To learn, you must realise how much you don’t know.
- To feel connected, you must risk being vulnerable.
- To choose wisely, you must accept that too many choices paralyse you.
- To find ease, you must stop forcing outcomes.
- To gain peace, you must work through the turmoil first.
It’s maddening.
It’s confusing.
And yet… it’s also how we become mentally strong.
Because the truth is:
Strength comes from surviving the things you thought would break you.
You move through the grief, and somehow you’re still standing.
You move through the disappointment, and somehow you learn.
You move through the hardship, and somehow you grow.
Like Elisabeth Kübler-Ross said:
“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, suffering, struggle, loss… and have found their way out of the depths.”
These people aren’t beautiful because they avoided pain.
They’re beautiful because they transformed through pain.
And that’s the heart of it:
**Beautiful people don’t just happen.
Mentally strong people don’t just happen.
They are shaped. Sharpened. Sculpted.**
You don’t become mentally strong by living an easy life.
You become mentally strong by going through hard things – and discovering you’re still capable of love, compassion, courage, wisdom, humour, and hope.
You become strong by realising:
- You can handle more than you think
- You can rise after falling
- You can rebuild after breaking
- You can grow after loss
- You can trust yourself again
- You can choose again
- You can begin again
Mental strength is not the absence of struggle.
It’s the presence of resilience.
It’s knowing that even in an f-ed up world,
You are wise enough, strong enough, soft enough, brave enough, and human enough to face whatever comes.
And you don’t have to do it perfectly.
You just have to keep going.
