Why the New 50 Still Feels Like the Old 50 (Just Prettier)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the fifty-year-olds of today look completely different from the fifty-year-olds of decades gone by.
On the surface, we look better.
We dress better.
We talk about skincare and energy hacks like we’re still in our thirties.
But underneath?
I think we’re simply a glossed-up version of the old 50.
I didn’t want to admit this… until last weekend.
THE NIGHT THAT EXPOSED US
I went out with my 50-something girlfriends to a concert.
The start time was listed as 9:30pm – which, let’s be honest, was one of the only reasons we all agreed to go.
If it had said 11pm? Hard pass.
We arrived looking fabulous, ready to SING AND DANCE “all night”…
(which, for us, meant “until around midnight, max.”)
The venue was outdoors – packed, loud, shoulder-to-shoulder – and we immediately noticed the first problem:
There was nowhere to sit.
Not a chair, not a bench, not even an old crate.
The only seating option was the cold ground.
One of my friends muttered, “We should’ve brought camping chairs,” as we eyed a group of older folks who had brought theirs.
They looked smug. Rightfully so.
We tried to rally. We tried to stand.
We lasted maybe three minutes.
And then salvation – we spotted tables and chairs inside the venue.
We sprinted.
(Well… we “hurried with intention.”)
Inside, we could talk.
Inside, we could hear each other.
Inside, the music wasn’t putting our eardrums into early retirement.
We settled in and waited for the band to start at 9:30pm.
Except 9:30 came and went.
Then 10pm.
Then 10:30pm.
One friend snapped, “If they say 9:30pm, they should START at 9:30pm.”
The irony?
Twenty-year-old me once waited HOURS for Bon Jovi in blazing heat, blinding sun, torrential rain, and hail – all in the same day – while standing in knee-deep mud.
Did I complain?
Not once.
Did I leave early?
Absolutely not.
And here I was in my 50s, yawning so hard it caused a chain reaction around the table.
Another friend sighed, “I miss my bed.”
We all nodded in solemn, wholehearted agreement.
Going to bed early used to be punishment.
Now it was luxury.
Now it was LIFE.
My ideal bedtime? 9:30pm, book in hand.
One friend said her perfect night was an early bedtime with her husband and Netflix.
Another said she loved being asleep before her teenagers even started their evening debates.
We laughed, we bonded, and we fully acknowledged what we once feared:
We had become the women our mothers once were.
And honestly? It wasn’t a bad thing.
THE CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT
The concert finally started at 10:45pm, and instantly we felt alive again.
We danced.
We shouted lyrics.
We felt – for a moment – twenty-five again.
Then our bodies reminded us:
“Sweetheart… you are NOT twenty-five.”
Feet aching.
Back complaining.
Makeup melting.
The metaphorical coach turning into a pumpkin.
At midnight on the dot, we looked at each other and simply nodded.
No drama. No guilt.
Just women who knew their limits and respected them.
We left early.
And we felt GREAT about it.
While the twenty-somethings danced until dawn, we drove home with zero FOMO, fully content with our decision.
That’s the beauty of midlife:
When we’re done, we’re done.
When we want to leave, we leave.
When we have something to say, we say it.
We’re not boring.
We’re not old-school.
We just finally know ourselves – what we value, what we enjoy, what we’re willing to tolerate – and we stop pretending otherwise.
SO ARE WE A PRETTIED-UP VERSION OF THE OLD 50?
Yes.
And also… ironically absolutely not.
We look younger, move younger, dress younger.
We still have spark, humour, passion, dreams, energy (in bursts).
We still go out, dance, explore, laugh until our stomach hurts.
But we also:
- love comfort
- love predictability
- love sleep
- love peace
- love choosing ourselves
- love not wasting time
- love leaving when we feel like leaving
We’ve simply become wiser versions of ourselves.
We’re not trying to be 25 again.
We’re trying to be fully alive at 50 – and that’s a completely different thing.
If this is the new 50?
I’ll take it.
