Why Kids Fall Off The Rails

To All the Whiners and Complainers in This World

Have you noticed how many people love to complain about everything and everyone?

They’re never happy.

There’s always something wrong.

Everything is a catastrophe.

They play the victim in situations where even the tiniest molehill feels like a mountain.

I call these kinds of people energy-suckers, because that’s exactly what they do – they drain you.

After a conversation with a chronic complainer, you walk away feeling depleted, while they walk away feeling strangely lighter.

“Oh gosh, I loved our chat. Thanks so much for listening!”

(Meanwhile you feel like someone emptied a garbage bag on your shoulders.)

And maybe you’re thinking: But I complain sometimes too.

Of course you do. You’re human.

But here’s the key point:

THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPLAINING AND VENTING.

Most people confuse the two.

Let me break it down.

COMPLAINING SOUNDS LIKE THIS:

  • Woe is me.
  • My life sucks.
  • This is awful.
  • It’s not fair.
  • There’s no solution.
  • Nothing will ever change.
  • I’m angry and I’ll never get over it.

A chronic complainer doesn’t want help – they want to marinate in misery.

You can recognise them easily because:

  • They repeat the same problems over and over
  • They never implement advice
  • Their stories never evolve
  • They resist solutions
  • They seem almost comfortable being stuck

Why?

Because complaining allows them to avoid taking action.

As long as they’re the victim, they never have to change.

VENTING SOUNDS LIKE THIS:

“I need your advice.”
“I’m struggling with this – what do you think I should do?”
“This sucks, but I want to find a way forward.”
“Can you help me process this?”

Venting is healthy.

Venting releases pressure.

Venting helps you sort through your thoughts and emotions to find clarity.

After you vent, you feel lighter.

After you complain, you feel worse.

That’s the difference.

HERE’S MY RESPONSE TO A PERSISTENT COMPLAINER:

“Well… unless you plan to complain about this until the day you die, what are you actually going to do about it?”

And here’s the thing – your next step doesn’t need to be dramatic.

You can:

  • Pause before deciding
  • Let emotions settle
  • Think it through
  • Take one small step

The point is simply this:

Persistent complaining without a plan is a waste of your life.

It frustrates everyone around you…

But most importantly, it keeps you stuck.

IF YOU MUST LET IT OUT, VENT – DO NOT COMPLAIN.

Venting is expressing what’s going on so you can resolve it.

Complaining is expressing what’s going on so you can stay stuck in it.

Venting is forward-focused.

Complaining is problem-focused.

When you vent:

  • you want to move from pain → peace
  • you want clarity
  • you want progress
  • you want emotional release
  • you want to feel grounded again

When you complain:

  • you want validation for staying stuck
  • you avoid responsibility
  • you refuse to look for solutions
  • you expect others to fix your emotions
  • you become emotionally powerless

Never forget:

You are either part of the problem or part of the solution.

When you’re part of the problem, you complain and wait for life (or someone else) to change.

When you’re part of the solution, you acknowledge your feelings, release the pressure, and take back control of the reins.

Sometimes that means finding the hidden lesson.

Sometimes it means accepting things as they are.

Sometimes it means choosing strength in the face of difficulty.

But whatever it is, you’re moving, not marinating.

A SIMPLE PLAN TO VENT EFFECTIVELY

If you want to stop complaining and start venting in a healthy way, here are the exact steps:

1 – What’s my real dilemma?
(State it in 10 words or less.)

2 – What am I feeling?
(Name every emotion.)

3 – How intense is the emotion?
(Scale 1-10.)

4 – Why is this upsetting me?
(Let it ALL out.)

5 – What could I possibly learn from this?

6 – What is the most logical solution?
(Or: What would the wisest person I know tell me to do?)

7 – What will I do next?
(Choose one step – then take it.)

8 – If I’m still overwhelmed:
Breathe deeply until your mind settles.

9 – If I still feel emotional after that:
Repeat the process until you see a path forward.

Remember:
You can think, “This situation sucks, and still decide to move forward anyway.

THE TRUTH IN THE END

Venting and complaining may start the same way…

But they end in completely different places.

Venting ends with clarity, peace, and action.

Complaining ends with frustration, stuckness, and no solution in sight.

A problem is already hard enough – don’t make it heavier by choosing to complain when you could choose to vent instead.
