So which foods fall into the category of pesky weight gainers?
These foods are some of the most notorious deal-breakers:
FOODS TO AVOID TO LOSE WEIGHT
TIP # 1 – Soda.
Before you say – WAIT, SODA ISN’T FOOD!
Let me assure you that when you put into your mouth contains a huge amount of calories – whether it is in liquid form or solid, you should be thinking of it as a food.
Most sodas have so many calories it’s alarming! As you know, excessive sugar intake quickly contributes to weight gain. No brainer there.
- A typical 20 ounce can of soda contains an average of 16 teaspoons of sugar, which is way more that you’d want to consume in your day to day eating.
- Choose less toxic options like water, coconut water and naturally extracted juices.
- Even sugar-free sodas which are filled with artificial sweeteners should be avoided as they come with their own set of problems.
Sweeteners, which can be up to 300 times sweeter than natural sugar, are known to increase appetite and result in overeating. Be on the lookout for artificial sweeteners and when possible, steer clear of them. Mehmet Oz
Artificial sweeteners may trigger cravings for other sweet foods. When your body is not fed nutrients, it asks again and again for more food, triggering heavy-duty cravings for fattening, sugary foods. Artificial sweeteners also mess with your metabolism. Suzanne Somers

TIP # 2 – Snacks with hydrogenated oil.
Not only does hydrogenated oil result in a buildup of fat in the body, but it’s also known to increase risk of heart disease.
Most snacks, whether sweet or salty, contain hydrogenated oil.
From potato chips to chocolate chip cookies, you’re bound to pump this oil into your body by eating them.
Packaged foods, partially hydrogenated oils and enriched flours are not your friends. Above all, remember this one word: transfats. Avoid it at all costs. Mehmet Oz
Increase your consumption of healthful fats like extra virgin olive oil, avocado, grass-fed beef, wild fish, coconut oil, nuts and seeds. At the same time, keep in mind that modified fats like hydrogenated or trans fats are the worst choices for brain health. David Perlmutter

- Other great choices for snacks include cut vegetable sticks, fruit salads and homemade hummus.

Wowzer…one cup of whole milk contains 5 grams of saturated fat, which can wreak havoc in your body, especially if you are lactose intolerant.

TIP # 4 – Refined grains.
Refined grains, in contrast to whole grains, refer to grains that have been significantly modified from their natural composition.
These refined grains (that we want to avoid) have been milled, which removes the bran and germ for a finer texture and longer shelf life.
But guess what?
It also removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins – the stuff we want to keep!
Whole grains, on the other hand, contain the entire grain kernel – the bran, germ and endosperm.
They are a good source of fiber, which helps with digestion, lowers cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure.
Refined grains are found in foods like white rice, and they cause drastic sugar spikes, which result in weight gain.
In fact they are processed by your body much like a sugar, hence the quick energy and then crash.
Since there are so many alternatives to refined grains, you may be more than comfortable in getting rid of them altogether and opting for wholegrains.
- Opt for brown rice instead of white rice. It goes through less processing and has the fibrous benefits associated with whole grains.
- Other products like quinoa and couscous are great substitutes for rice.
Best options for whole grains include:
- Oatmeal
- Bran
- Barley
- Brown rice
- Popcorn
- Quinoa
- Buckwheat
- Whole Grain Rye
- Millet
- Spelt
- Whole grain pasta

Examples of refined grains include:
- White flour
- White rice

TIP # 5 – Processed food.
Last and definitely least is processed food.
You can basically define processed food as anything “unnatural.”
These foods are filled with preservatives to extend the life of the product.
They’re also usually full of sugar, fat and carbohydrates – all elements which contribute directly to weight gain.
- Aim to eliminate packaged foods as much as possible to lessen your exposure to unwanted fat and sugar.
- Replace processed foods with options found in natural food stores or organic farms. Note: you weren’t born wanting processed food. You were taught to want it. You learned it. You can unlearn it.
- If processed food somehow ends up in your home, read the label diligently and ensure the listed sugars, fats and carbohydrates don’t exceed your daily allowance.
Research has shown that even small amounts of processed food alter the chemical balance of our brain and cause negative mood swings along with noticeable dips in energy. Marilu Henner
There is absolutely no substitute for the best. Good food cannot be made of inferior ingredients masked with high flavor. It is true thrift to use the best ingredients available and to waste nothing. James Beard
