How To Stop Being Lazy – 9 Steps To Beat Laziness
Want to know how to stop being lazy? Here are 9 simple steps to help you beat laziness and stop being so lazy today.
Hey my friend,
Ah lazy – we have all felt this indifferent, passive feeling at times.
SIDENOTE:
Before I go deep into how to avoid laziness I want to make it clear that lazy is DIFFERENT from the idea of sitting down to have a break after a hard day’s work.
Lazy is not when you reward yourself with rest after exerting yourself.
Lazy is not being productive and then giving your mind some quiet time afterwards.
Instead, the term lazy is defined as being unwilling to work or use energy. It’s when you purposefully avoid work even though you HAVE the physical or mental ability to act or exert that energy (so by definition you are not lazy if you physically or mentally aren’t capable of doing something.)
Now that we are clear on that I want to note that laziness is a natural tendency. All creatures gravitate toward comfort, or at least what’s perceived to be comfortable.
However, laziness is usually indulging in short-term comfort at the expense of long-term pain.
Got it? By definition being lazy IS NOT A GOOD THING and not the same as resting or relaxing (which ARE GOOD THINGS!)
Ask yourself now: Do you know anyone with a great life that’s lazy (real lazy as opposed to they like to rest after they work hard)?
How many names did you come up with?
I personally don’t know many seriously lazy people who have achieved great success. Oprah definitely isn’t on that lazy list.
For the most part, the law of cause and effect holds true when it comes to laziness.
There is a price for everything we do in life and laziness comes with a long-term, expensive pricetag.
Here’s the truth: being lazy on a regular basis can have a severe negative impact on your life.
The opposite of being lazy is being energetic and productive.
It’s when you use your time wisely and actually accomplish something useful in your life.
So if you have ever asked “HOW CAN I STOP BEING LAZY?” this post is for you!
Here are 9 steps to beat laziness and accomplish more:
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #1
1 – Find a way to get excited.
Consider the benefits you’ll receive by getting your goal done.
What impact will it have on your life if you actually get off your bottom to take some action?
So many great things come from taking action.
You might accomplish a fantastic goal or discover you are learning and growing in life.
Maybe it’s the mere fact that you are demonstrating self-control and discipline that is something you can get excited about.
Yes self-control and discipline are definitely attractive qualities to celebrate in life!
Note – It’s much harder to accomplish something if you’re complaining about it or doing nothing at all.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #2
2 – Set a deadline.
When you have plenty of time to complete something, or no deadline it is human nature to procrastinate.
Setting a deadline in the near future can help to focus your attention and energy.
You want to have something to strive for in a particular time frame.
Pick an end completion date and schedule it into your diary.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #3
3- Create smaller tasks from the main task.
You know what they say: the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
For the record, every large task can be broken down into smaller steps.
Even when you build a house there are specific smaller steps to follow.
First the site must be prepared.
Then the foundation is created, and the framing begins.
The remaining steps are followed until the house is completed.
- The overall project might be big and intimidating from the onset but when it’s broken down into smaller steps, the goal seems more palatable.
- I also get overwhelmed by things until I pinpoint the smaller steps I need to take to achieve a goal. When you identify these smaller chunks, the individual tasks are easier to handle.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #4
4 – Focus on taking the first step.
The first step is to establish that something is possible. The second and most valuable step is to then GET STARTED.
Once you get started, the momentum you’ve created can carry you far.
Remember activity breeds further activity.
This means: moving a little will get you moving more.
Sitting on the couch on the other hand tends to lead to more sitting.
Am I right? You know what you need to do.
You need to do something different.
YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING!
You need to take the first step. Every journey starts with that first step. Also important is fuelling it with the desire to achieve something, even if you can’t see right now how it is possible.
The act of taking the first step is what separates the winners from the losers.
Please note: you don’t need to have all the answers before you take teh first step!
Courage isn’t about knowing the path in advance.
It’s just about taking the first step and working out what you feel is THE NEXT BEST STEP TO TAKE AFTER THAT AND THEN AGAIN AFTER THAT.
Don’t overthink it.
Just get up and move.
The first step towards getting anywhere in life is deciding that you are not going to stay where you are.
In order to solve any problem you need to recognize that the problem exists.
As Martin Luther King so wisely said, faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
The journey is a thousand miles begins with one step – that is how you turn the invisible into the visible.
First step: set goals. Second step: keep moving and make things happen. Instead of worrying about the mountain of work ahead of you, focus on getting one simple task completed.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #5
5 – Read or listen to something that motivates you.
If you are feeling lazy, you might find that something as simple as reading an inspiring book or listening to a song energizes you. Use these two things to your advantage!
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #6
6 – Consider the pain of not getting started.
We often think pain is only when we physically get hurt.
But here I’m speaking about a different sort of pain – the pain of regret.
What will happen if you continue to be lazy?
What will it cost you in the future?
What has it cost you so far?
Instead of using pain as a reason to be lazy, use pain to create action.
In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take.
Regret is another form of self-punishment.
If you want to do something, do it now.
If you don’t, you will just end up regretting that lack of action.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #7
7 – Remind yourself that the last few years have flown by.
Time passes by fast doesn’t it?
Has your laziness impacted on the amount you were able to achieve over the last 5 years?
What have you managed to accomplish in that time?
Five years goes by quickly, especially when one day seems to be a copy of every other day.
If laziness is a chronic condition in your life, you need to nip it in the bud ASAP.
Your life is precious and so too is your time. Get up and do something!
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #8
8 – Reward yourself for activity.
Life really shouldn’t be all work and no play.
If you move back that feeling of laziness and get something important done I want you to celebrate that accomplishment.
You have the right to get excited and be proud of yourself.
HOW TO STOP BEING LAZY – TIP #9
9 – Be patient.
Patience is the calm acceptance that things happen in a different order than the one you may have in your mind.
Patience is not passive.
On the contrary it is concentrated strength.
It’s common to believe that action comes from motivation, but the opposite may be truer.
Action leads to results. Results lead to motivation.
Be mentally tough and get busy.
You’ll have a reason to be motivated soon enough.
Patience is not just the ability to wait but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.
It isn’t learning to wait but learning what is worth waiting for.
Good things take time but they won’t come to fruition if you constantly fail to take action.
Avoid allowing laziness to keep you on the sideline.
Laziness will indeed steal your time and limit your results.
So go over this list again and do what you can to beat laziness today i.e. get up and take action!
