Husband Wife Fighting – List Of Most Common Fights

Husband wife fighting is pretty common (and fine if you can resolve your fighting promptly). Here’s a list of the things couples usually fight about.

Let’s chat about husband wife fighting.

Are you in a relationship and feel like all you and your partner do is fight? If so, please know that conflict is a natural part of any relationship – couples often will find that they disagree on various topics.

However conflict and fighting in itself isn’t usually the problem. The problem instead is when both parties can’t come to a common resolution to their fighting. Or alternatively when they get nasty in their disagreements and both walk away feeling unseen, unheard, misunderstood and/or their perspective is not appreciated.

Let’s start today by pinpointing exactly what it is that you fight about. This information will help you realize that there’s a good chance that you aren’t alone. Some conflict is normal and here’s a list of the most common things that people tend to fight about include:

HUSBAND WIFE FIGHTING

1 – Communication Issues:

Do you feel like your partner really understands what you’re trying to communicate to him (and vice versa)? If the answer is no, there’s a good chance that misunderstandings, miscommunication, or a lack of effective communication can lead to disagreements.

We say things like: “He just doesn’t understand me!” “That isn’t what I meant!” “But he SHOULD have known I was angry from the way I was acting” etc. We expect our partners to be mind-readers or magicians who can guess our needs ahead of time. Expect of course there’s no such thing and as such, differences in communication styles or failure to express oneself clearly may contribute to conflicts.

2 – Finances:

Oh money stuff! This can be a real issue if the way you approach money is different. Eg. one person likes to spend while the other person likes to save. Or one person values different things…like spending money on alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, fast food, travel or experiences while the other person thinks it’s a total waste of money.

Even if you have a surplus of money, money-related issues, such as budgeting, spending habits, and financial priorities, can still be a frequent sources of conflict in relationships.

3 – Household Chores:

Gosh this is something I often find myself arguing about with my partner and I know I’m not alone. Different expectations can lead to arguments. For example, if you think your partner should take his dirty plate to the sink and wash it when done and he doesn’t do it = potential argument (personal example here!).

Couples also fight about the division of household responsibilities (even if both work full-time or one is a stay-at-home parent, it’s still normal to have different opinions re: how to divvy up the household chores). There’s also the issue of different opinions re: cleanliness standards, and how to carry out set chores – both of which can lead to arguments.

4 – Intimacy and Sex:

One wants it more often, the other less. Or one wants more romance and the other doesn’t care for romance at all. Differences in sexual needs, desires, or expectations can be a source of tension in relationships. Even worse, it is often not spoken about but instead this conflict gently simmers and brews beneath the surface.

5 – Family Matters:

Conflicts can definitely arise from disagreements with extended family members, decisions related to in-laws, or issues involving children and parenting styles. When it comes to parenting, fighting can arise when one parent is too strict, the other too lenient or when there is a disagreement re: how to approach a particular parenting issue.

I myself was lucky to have great in-laws but there are other couples that struggle a lot with the issue of in-laws and extended family. They fight about how often to visit family members, what to do re: over-involved and over-opiniated loved ones and how to set appropriate boundaries or cope with the lack of appropriate boundaries.

6 – Jealousy and Trust:

Trust issues, jealousy, and concerns about fidelity can lead to conflicts and emotional distress in relationships. This makes sense because if you can’t trust your partner, how can you trust the commitment you have made to each other and also feel safe inside your relationship

7 – Priorities and Values:

Differences in personal values, life goals, and priorities can also contribute to disagreements, especially when it comes to major life decisions. If one partner values hard work and the other partner values “living it up all the time” = this equals potential for an argument.

If one partner wants to travel the world while the other partner wants to settle down and have a family = this equals potential for an argument. Same goes for differences in ambition, future dreams and religious values. Do your dreams and values match up or do they take you down two different roads in life?

8 – Work-Life Balance:

It’s easy to get into a fight, when you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed and exhausted. When you’re in that state, even the littlest things can trigger than argument simply because your fuse is short and what you really need is to jump into bed and have a rest. Struggles to balance work commitments with personal and family time can cause tension, particularly if one partner feels neglected.

9 – Social Activities:

Gosh this is also very normal, especially if an introvert is in a relationship with an extravert. Or if one is a homebody while the other craves constant social interactions outside of the home. Conflicts may arise when there are differences in social preferences, such as how often to socialize, the choice of friends, or how to spend free time.

10 – Personal Space and Independence:

Do you like to maintain your personal space and have lots of quiet time on your own while your partner doesn’t? Do you think that couples should spend all their time together or is it okay for them to have their own separate interests and spend time apart pursuing them?

Balancing personal space and individual independence with the need for closeness in a relationship can be a common point of contention, especially when each partner has different needs and desires (also very normal).

11 – Unresolved Past Issues:

Gosh there’s nothing like bringing back and discussing an old fight from 10 years ago to start an unnecessary fight today. These sort of lingering issues or unresolved conflicts from the past will definitely cause tension and resurface often if not properly addressed and dealt with.

Now I’m not saying you have to love everything that happened in your part but you can choose to agree to disagree or leave the past behind rather than dredging it up whenever you’re feeling annoyed.

12 – Stress and External Pressures:

Outside of your relationship, are you feeling stressed or pressured? Do you feel like external factors such as work stress, financial pressure, or other life challenges contribute to increased tension and conflict within your relationship?

If your answer is yes, this is again normal. It’s still important to separate the outside stresses of your life from your relationship rather than making your partner “pay for it” by being a punching bag whenever you’re tired or feeling depleted.

All in all, conflict itself is not inherently harmful to relationships; it’s how conflicts are managed and resolved that matters. It’s normal to fight. It’s normal to disagree. It’s normal for human to have different opinions.

BUT IT’S HOW YOU CHOOSE TO APPROACH THOSE DIFFERENCES THAT WILL IMPACT THE QUALITY OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP.

In the end, open communication, active listening, and a willingness to compromise are essential skills for navigating disagreements and maintaining healthy relationships. Couples who do this work together – who do their best to understand and address their underlying issues and differences – are more likely to build stronger, more resilient relationships and partnerships.

I wish you the best of luck, Frances xxx
