Living Expenses – 7 Perfect Ways To Slash Your Living Expenses

Want to know how to save money on your living expenses? Here are 7 perfect ways to slash your living expenses now.

Let’s chat about living expenses.

Here are 7 simple ways you can slash your living expenses today and save lots of money at the same time.

Now I know that finding money in your budget for unexpected expenses isn’t always easy.

But what can you do when you need to cut your living expenses immediately?

Like hey THIS IS URGENT, I NEED TO DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!

Take the time to review the following strategies now so that if there ever comes a time when you need to slash your living expenses quickly, you will know exactly what you need to do.

LIVING EXPENSES TIP

1 – Conserve lighting in your home.

Think about the number of times that lights are left on in 3 or 4 rooms at a time.

Is it really necessary?

If not, switch it off.

Make sure to use a single light only when you need it.

If you replace your most often-used lights with compact fluorescent light bulbs, you’ll also save even more on your utilities bill.

2 – Reduce your cable or satellite television services.

If you are tied to an expensive cable subscription, now might be the time to consider ditching it.

Are you really watching all of those channels?

To save some money quickly, decrease your television cable or satellite services for a few months.

You might find that you don’t miss all those channels after all.

LIVING EXPENSES TIP

3 – Take your lunch to work at least 3 days a week.

Doing so will cut your lunch expenditures by over 50%.

And that’s money you’ll immediately have in your pocket.

Even better consider packing your lunch every single day.

In order to make this as easy as possible, prepare and pack your lunch the evening before when you’re cleaning up the kitchen after dinner.

It can be a container of leftovers or a fresh sandwich.

Either way, your lunch will be ready to go in the morning when you are.

LIVING EXPENSES TIP

4 – Use less water when you shower and bathe.

Pretty simple equation, right?

If your showers are shorter, your water bill will be lower.

For your shower, consider setting your cell phone timer for 5 minutes, which is more than enough time to shower and shampoo.

For the bath, fill the tub no more than half full, which will still give you plenty of water to bathe in.

5 – Spend less on groceries.

There are so many simple ways you can save on groceries each week.

Consider a few of the following tips:

  • Buy the store brand.

  • Use coupons. Many stores keep their store’s coupons right by the door where you walk in.

  • Bulk purchase items that are on sale.

  • Examine all “buy one get one free” offers to get free food.

  • Choose fewer snack food items and processed foods. Shop instead around the perimeter of the store which usually covers fresh fruit and veggies, bread, milk, meat and eggs etc.

6 – Adjust your thermostat.

Even better is not using the thermostat at all if you can cope without it.

If you must use air conditioning or heating, set the temperature on your thermostat to one degree warmer in the summer and turn it one degree cooler if your furnace is operating.

On cold nights, you might even be able to adjust your thermostat to an even cooler setting, as you’ll be snuggled under the covers for warmth.

Fun fact: we in our home have NEVER kept the heat or air conditioning on throughout the night ever.

Our rule of thumb is one hour before bed just so it’s comfortable enough to sleep in and then off.

LIVING EXPENSES TIP

7 – Reduce your fuel use.

Gas (or petrol as we call it here in Oz) is super expensive.

Currently $1.65 per litre.

Consider the following tips to help you reduce your fuel use:

  • Carpool to and from work if this is an option for you.

  • Is work close enough for you to walk to and from the office? If so, take a walk.

  • Run errands on your way to and from work to save fuel costs.

  • Resist the urge to jump into the car to go to the shops whenever the temptation hits you. Can it wait until tomorrow or the next day?

  • If you work from home, set a goal to stay out of the car at least 4 days a week. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the money you’ll save – not only from the fuel you’ll be saving but also by the fact that you’re not going anywhere to spend any money (win, win!).

Living expenses

All in all, by using less electricity, water and fuel you will by default saving more money every week.

But this is just the beginning of your options!

By decreasing your cable/satellite service and packing your lunch at least 3 days a week you will also reduce your living expenses substantially.

However, you can save the most money by being money-wise at the grocery store (this is where it is so easy to buy stuff you don’t really need and these little things add up).

Ultimately it is up to you to take action to slash your living costs if you want to save your cash.

And don’t we all?

Have an open mind and be willing to try different things to save money.
