Bad Parents – Glaring Signs That Scream Bad Parenting
Ever wondered what makes bad parents? Here are some glaring signs that steer you in the direction of bad parenting so avoid these!
Let’s chat about bad parents and what makes a “bad parent”.
Before we dive on in, I want to say that defining what makes a “bad” parent can be complex, as parenting is a nuanced and subjective experience.
What you consider to be a bad parent can differ from my definition. That’s because parenting involves a wide range of skills, attitudes, and behaviors, and different people may have different opinions on what constitutes good or bad parenting.
However, there are indeed certain behaviors and attitudes that are generally considered detrimental to a child’s well-being. Keep in mind that these characteristics may not apply universally, and context is essential when evaluating parenting. So let’s dig in…

BAD PARENTS SIGNS
1 – Neglect:
Failing to provide basic physical and emotional needs, such as food, shelter, supervision, and affection, can be harmful to a child’s development. This is why it’s considered to be a sign of bad parenting.
2 – Abuse:
Most of us will intuitively understand that hysical, emotional, or verbal abuse can cause severe emotional and psychological harm to a child. It includes actions like hitting, yelling, demeaning language, or any form of cruelty.
3 – Inconsistent Discipline:
Discipline is defined as the practice of training kids and teens to obey or follow a specific set of rules or a code of behaviour. We discipline so that our kids understand that there is a consequence to their actions and these consequences are chosen to help correct disobedience.
However inconsistent or overly harsh discipline, as well as a lack of clear boundaries, can lead to confusion and insecurity in a child. This is why it is considered to be less than ideal when parenting.
4 – Lack of Emotional Support:
I always say that every human in this world just wants to be loved, accepted and understood – and this applies to our kids too.
Consisently failing to offer emotional support, warmth, and encouragement to your child can hinder their emotional development and well-being. So yet another NO-NO.
5 – Overindulgence or Permissiveness:
While it’s essential to be supportive, excessively permissive parenting (aka letting your kids do whatever they want, whenever they want, without clear rules and consequences) can lead to issues such as entitlement and lack of self-discipline.
6 – Neglecting Education:
We all want our kids to learn and grow in life and education contributes to that growth. This is why it’s so important to ensure they have access to learn new skills and knowledge in life.
Failing to prioritize a child’s education or not being actively involved in their learning can hinder their natural intellectual development.

7 – Failure to Set a Positive Example:
It’s easier for most of us to acknowledge that yes, failing to set a positive example for our kids is less than ideal when it comes to parenting. Parents who engage in negative behaviors, such as substance abuse, dishonesty, or violence, may set harmful examples for their children – something you want to avoid.
8 – Disregard for Safety:
It’s super important that our kids not only feel safe, but that they are safe too. Ignoring or neglecting a child’s safety, whether in the home or in other environments, can put a child at risk. Another NO-NO!

9 – Lack of Communication:
A strong parental bond involves good communication between the parent and child. Just the same, a lack of open and effective communication can hinder the parent-child relationship and make it challenging for a child to express their needs and feelings.
10 – Ignoring Individuality:
I think we all know how fantastic it feels to be able to express our individuality, without feeling like someone is trying to squish us into a box where we don’t fit. (Just like the analogy of forcing a square peg into a round hole).
The same is true for our kids. When we fail to recognize and respect our child’s unique personality, interests, and talents, it can hinder their self-esteem and identity development. This is something good parents try to avoid.
11 – Parental Conflict:
Have you ever been around parents who fight and fight all the time? It seriously sucks to watch that conflict play out in front of you as a kid! Frequent and intense conflicts between parents can negatively impact a child’s emotional well-being.
So please avoid having unhealthy conflict in front of your kids. It scares them. It makes them feel upset and sad. Just don’t do it. Don’t give your kids adult problems to carry on their child-size shoulders.
In a nutshell, it’s important to note that parenting is a challenging role, and everyone makes mistakes. “Good” parents do their best to learn from mistakes, adapt to the child’s needs, and provide a safe and nurturing environment for their growth.
Whereas parents that display less-than-stellar parenting skills have no desire to do better, even when their kids are suffering due to their actions.
I wish you the best of luck, Frances xxx
