Good Enough Parents – Here’s What It Honestly Takes
Want to know what good enough parents look like? Here’s a list that shows you how to be a “good enough” parent.
Let’s chat about tips for “good enough” parents.
This is something that is pretty difficult to define as we all have our own definition of what “good enough” looks like. But because I’m often asked this question, I’ve decided to do my best to paint a picture of what “good enough” might potentially look like, from a child’s perspective.
Here’s what some might say are common signs of being a “good enough” parent:
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Show Unconditional Love
All kids want to be loved. So good enough parents do their best to demonstrate their love and affection for their child consistently, making sure they feel secure and valued.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Set Realistic Expectations
Understand your child’s age-appropriate behaviors and set realistic expectations. Recognize that each child is unique and may develop at their own pace.

GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Active Listening
Practice active listening to understand your child’s thoughts and feelings. Give them your full attention when they want to talk.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Positive Reinforcement
Reinforce positive behaviors with praise and encouragement. Focus on what your child is doing well rather than solely pointing out mistakes.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Be a Positive Role Model
Children often learn by example, so strive to be a positive role model. Demonstrate the values and behaviors you want your child to adopt.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Consistent Discipline
Establish clear and consistent rules for behavior. Ensure that consequences for breaking rules are fair and predictable.

GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Quality Time
Spend quality time with your child. Engage in activities they enjoy, and create opportunities for bonding and shared experiences.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Encourage Independence
Allow your child to make age-appropriate decisions and develop a sense of independence. Offer guidance and support as they learn.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Communicate Openly
Foster open communication. Encourage your child to express their thoughts and feelings, and be open to discussing a wide range of topics.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Educate Yourself
Stay informed about child development, parenting strategies, and relevant issues. Books, articles, and parenting classes can be valuable resources.

GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Prioritize Health
Ensure your child has a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity. Address health concerns promptly and teach healthy habits by example.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Create a Safe Environment
Establish a safe and secure home environment. Childproof your home for younger children and teach older children about safety.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Teach Responsibility
Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities. This helps instill a sense of accountability and contributes to their development.

GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Apologize and Learn
Acknowledge when you make mistakes. Apologize if necessary and use the opportunity to teach your child about responsibility and learning from errors.
GOOD ENOUGH PARENTS:
Seek Support
Parenting can be challenging, and it’s okay to seek support. Connect with other parents, join parenting groups, or seek guidance from professionals when needed.
