TIP # 1 – Remain calm.
The most important thing you can do when dealing with someone acting aggressively is to remain calm throughout the exchange.
Yes calm, take a deep breath and stay strong.
If you aren’t open to a calm and open conversation, then the next best thing is to just walk away.
You getting angry or frustrated is a recipe for disaster and will only make the matter worse.

TIP # 2 – Empathize.
Have you stopped to ask yourself what’s actually making the other person so angry?
Perhaps they’re stressed or overwhelmed.
Perhaps they are feeling wronged or hurt.
Make an effort to understand their reasons and think about how these particular problems would affect you if you were in their shoes.

I know you can see it (super clearly) but sometimes people don’t even realize how they’re acting, or how it affects those around them.
They’re simply acting on emotion and don’t realize the extent of the damage they’re causing others.
If this is the case, express your concerns with them and gently try to make them more aware of what their actions are doing.

TIP # 4 – Be honest with yourself about your own anger issues.
How about you?
Can you sometimes be aggressive as well?
If this is the case, this can affect how your loved ones act too.
For example, if you have children and they see you acting aggressively, they may copy you because they think that is a normal way to respond in a particular situation.
Be willing to own your own flaws.

TIP # 5 – Talk about it.
This tip may not be suitable for all and will depend on your relationship with the angry person.
If you’re close to them, perhaps a friend or a romantic partner, then consider being open and honest with them.
Are they willing to be vulnerable with you?
Will they share your thoughts and feelings with you?
Give them a chance to talk about what has made them so angry.

TIP # 6 – Emotionally distance yourself.
Quite often someone will direct their anger at you even though you are not the direct cause of it.
It sucks and it can be frustrating but knowing this will help you to distance yourself from the anger emotionally.
You are not to blame my friend.
They are simply lashing out at you so do your best to emotionally distance yourself for a moment.

TIP # 7 – Try to distract them.
A good method you can use to diffuse a situation is to use a distraction.
Laughter is one of the best methods, as it is impossible to laugh and be angry at the same time.
Can you find a way to lighten the mood or make them laugh?
If so, do your best to distract them in a lighthearted way.

TIP # 8 – Use active listening.
When you listen carefully to what a person is saying, you might be able to truly understand why they’ve become so aggressive in the first place.
Don’t take their anger at face value.
Something must have happened to make them as angry as they are.
Once you understand their reasoning, it might be easier to resolve the situation.

TIP # 9 – Involve others.
If you’re feeling threatened or intimidated, you may want to remove yourself from the situation entirely.
Trust your gut.
You should be able to tell when things have crossed the line.
If you’re dealing with an aggressive person at work, you may want to get a colleague or your boss to help resolve the situation.
Ask for help if you need it!

TIP # 10 – Set consequences for their actions.
If someone is acting aggressively and won’t back down, it’s time to set boundaries and consequences.
Telling them that there are consequences to their actions will sometimes make them rethink about how they are acting and allow them to calm down.
If not, you need to follow through on the consequences anyway.
Those boundaries are there for a reason, to protect you.

All in all, dealing with confrontation and angry people does take great communication skills on your part.
Hopefully as you start to use these techniques, you’ll experience less stress and grief, greater confidence, and more effective relationship skills.
My best piece of advice is to stay strong and be certain that aggressiveness is not a trait that you want directed at you ever.
Draw those lines and do your best to remain calm in the face of these uncomfortable situations.
