If you’re looking for tips on how to make a time capsule box and want some time capsule ideas for kids, you have come to the right place!

In our house we are big on celebrating birthdays and every year my kids have always had pretty cool themed parties.

Our recent party themes have included: the Minute To Win It party, the Lip Sync Battle party and the Once Upon A Time party.

But one of my all-time favorites has to be my daughter’s Welcome To The Future party for her 12th birthday.

The theme was centered all around the idea of “When I Grow Up” and each child was requested to come to the party dressed as their dream occupation.

Along with their birthday invitations, the guests were also given a mock time capsule – a big black shoe-box, labelled with their name and time capsule information, that they were to return on the day of the party for years of safe-keeping. 

 

 

I’ve always loved the idea of creating a time capsule that I could bury in my backyard, but alas, somehow I’ve never created one for myself.

 

So when my daughter wanted to have futuristic party, where they get to play the part of grownups for a day, I jumped at the idea of getting her and her friends to make personalized time capsules that we could store away and open again on her 18th birthday. 

 

Here you will find an exact copy of instructions given to the children invited to the party.

 

These instructions were included inside the black box that the guests received with their invitation.

(For the record, I befriended a local shoe-shop who was happy to put aside 20 black shoe-boxes as they were discarded for recycling.)

TIME CAPSULE INSTRUCTION GUIDE

 

Thanks so much for taking part in this special activity to celebrate Savannah’s 12th birthday.

Our theme for this year is “When I Grow Up – Welcome to the Future” and we thought it would be fun to make a time capsule which will be opened on or after Jan 30th, 2022, which is Savannah’s 18th birthday.

You will have received a black box for you to fill and bring with you to Savannah’s birthday party.

Inside you will find a few activities:  

  • Letter to Future Me
  • Self Portrait of Me
  • All of My Favorite Things
  • About Me Page
  • Make sure to also include a photo of yourself! –
  • You can also fill the box with whatever else you like.

 

Please note:

 

Please do not put inside the box anything which is super special or that you will miss because you won’t be seeing it for many years!

You can instead include items that you have outgrown or no longer need but that still hold a special spot in your heart.

For example: an old book, drawing, note, school assignment, piece of jewellery or clothing. Really anything you like – preferably something which reminds you of YOU, your family, school, friends and your life.

If you like you can choose to decorate your box but make sure to glue your name label at the top of your box.

We look forward to opening these time capsule boxes with you in 2022.

That’s just 6 years away.

It will be so exciting to see how much things have changed by then!

P.S.

 

1. The time-capsules will be stored in the roof of our house, unless anyone specifically would like to keep them at their own home (that’s absolutely fine with us too!) Just make sure – no peeking for six years).

2. Make sure not to over-stuff your box and make sure the lid fits properly on top.

3. Finally you don’t need to seal the box shut in case the girls would like to share what they have included at the party (they don’t have to share it though).

I can seal them later on the day.

I have to say:

 

There was something so special about seeing the girls arrive with their time capsule boxes, and knowing that they would be adults the next time we all opened the boxes up together.

 

That being said: you absolutely do not need to host a birthday party with this theme to create a time capsule for your child.

 

Anyone can do it – at any age and any time! In fact, I encourage you to do it with your family.

 

Memories are our special moments that tell our stories and it is so interesting to see what kids think is important enough to score a coveted position in their time capsule box.

They choose things that are special to them and that they never want to lose. 

 

No matter what happens some memories can never be replaced.

 

Other memories fade and I look forward to the day that my children open up their time capsule box and are engulfed with that feeling of sentimentality, as though they have for a moment stepped back into the past…
