Want to know how to stop whining in kids?

If so, you aren’t alone! Here are 13 ways to stop your child from whining so you can have more peace at home.

Let me ask you a question mom to mom.

Have you ever had your child whine and it feels like your ears are starting to fume?

A child who whines can quickly turn a simple trip to the grocery store into an ordeal.

You know the deal:

Your goal was to get home quickly to make dinner, but now you’re falling behind schedule.

You try to remain patient, but those high-pitched wails frazzle your nerves.

While it may be tempting to lose your temper or give in to your child’s pleas, trust me, there are more constructive alternatives to dealing with whining.

Here in this post you will learn how to deal with whining and prevent it before it starts.

What to Do When Your Child Whines and how to stop whining:

Stop whining

Tip # 1 – Stay calm.

Trust me, your child will pick up on your mood so ensure you’re doing what you can to reduce both your stress levels.

Take a deep breath and smile.

Speak softly and clearly.

Tip # 2 – Stand fast.

Giving your child what they ask for is the quickest way to stop their whining, but that approach will backfire in the long run.

That’s because you’re training them to believe that whining works.

You don’t want to do that!

Instead, hold your ground.

Be firm.

Be strong.

You are a good mom and you are an adult.

Trust that you know what you’re doing.

Tip # 3 – Suggest alternatives.

Let your child know that it’s okay to ask for what they want but they need to do it in a courteous manner.

Role play this scenario out so they can understand the difference between a shrill voice and a pleasant one.

You may need to specifically show them how to do this but that’s okay.

That’s how they will learn.

They won’t know how to do better until they are SHOWN how to do better.

Tip # 4 – Offer positive reinforcement.

Ooooh there is a lot of power in this one tip.

Praise your child when they behave well.

Don’t ignore their good behavior.

Instead applaud their efforts and best attempts to put their their feelings into words and seek mutually satisfactory solutions.

Let them know that such achievements are difficult even for grown-ups.

Trust me, there are plenty of adults out in this world who still sometimes like to complain and whine at times.

You and me might even be one of them!

Tip # 5 – Lighten up.

You may feel like there’s a spotlight shining on you when your child has a meltdown in the school parking lot.

But trust me, other parents get it.

In reality, most parents know that it’s natural for kids to whine, and you may have more sympathy and support than you realize.

Don’t assume the worst from other people’s attention.

I know I’m always understanding if I see another parent struggling because I have been in those shoes before.

Tip # 6 – Rule out medical causes.

While most whining is harmless, it can sometimes also be a sign that your child is under the weather.

If they seem more irritable or fidgety than usual, check for health issues first.

Just something for you to consider.

Are they feeling ill?

Is something else the underlining cause?

How to Prevent Your Child From Whining:

Tip # 7 – Nurture your connection.

Your child’s grumbling may also be a way of seeking more of your attention.

Make it a top priority to spend significant family time and one-on-one time together on a daily basis.

Connection that is fused with love rather than negative attention.

I’m always amazed when adults say children “just did that to get attention.” Naturally children who need attention will do all kinds of things to get it. Why not just give it to them? Lawrence J. Cohen

Children who feel heard tend to outgrow their whining stage much earlier than children who feel like they have to fight to be heard. L. R. Knost

Tip # 8 – Learn and play.

FYI – Adequate stimulation will also reduce whining.

I know this may seem simplistic but you also have the option of enjoying fun and enriching activities with your child like reading books and playing outdoor games.

Buy a family membership at a local science museum or community pool.

Keep them stimulated and engaged with things they love to do.

Tip # 9 – Enforce bedtimes.

Many children whine because they are simply sleep-deprived.

Try moving bedtimes back an hour and stick to a consistent schedule even on weekends.

I know I feel like whining when I am exhausted and the only remedy for that is getting more sleep.

Well rested children are often happier children.

Tip # 10 – Encourage healthy eating.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel totally crappy after eating crappy food.

Could the same be true for your child?

A nutritious diet will give your child more energy, a clearer head and help to stabilize their blood sugar.

In order to see if this could be the culprit for your child’s whiny behavior, plan balanced meals and lots of healthy snacks, including plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep their tummies happy (which will in turn positively impact their mood).

Tip # 11 – Take breaks.

If your child is acting up, they may have simply exceeded their attention span.

Put shortly they need a break so switch activities or give them a little quiet time to refresh and recharge.

Tip # 12 – Avoid other triggers.

In addition to the events that most children find to be a little stressful, your child may have their own personal triggers.

Pay attention to when they whine to see if it may be related to something going on at school or at home.

Stop whining

Tip # 13 – Be a positive role model.

Let me ask you a sincere question – how often do you whine and complain in your own life?

Are you a whiner?

Do you like to share with the world why you don’t want to do something?

Does everything have a negative spin on it?

The truth is your child will be less likely to whine if you avoid excessive complaining too.

This is time for us to be totally honest with ourselves.

Monitor your conversations to ensure that you’re setting the kind of example you want your kids to follow.

Whining can often be a learned behavior.

If you don’t like the way something is, remember you do have the option to change it or if you can’t change it CHANGE THE WAY YOU VIEW IT.

What you’re supposed to do when you don’t like a thing is change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Don’t complain. Maya Angelou

All in all, make sure to give your child the attention they need and teach them how to replace whining with more effective communication styles.

Not only will you enjoy your time together more, you will also prepare your child to interact politely and respectfully with others as they grow older.

Less whining = more peace in the home.

I promise you that is something that will be worth it in the end.

Much love,

Frances Vidakovic
