Confession time: I’m slightly obsessed with TED Talks.

Like podcasts, I only discovered them last year and when I did, I suffered the most serious case of long-overdue FOMO.

Seriously, was I living in some weird bubble for the last 30 years that blinded me to the presence of TED Talks?

Here was this amazing resource collection of inspiration, knowledge and education available to the world FOR FREE and I had arrived way too late to the party.

TED talks in a nutshell:

• TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design

• The TED talk slogan is “ideas worth spreading.”

• TED speakers present great, well-informed ideas in less than 18 minutes (so short and sweet).

• It was founded in February 1984 as a conference (where the first event lost money) and has been held annually since 1990.

• Tedx events are produced independently of TED conferences, with speakers that stick to the traditional TED format and rules.

• In 2006 six Ted Talks were posted online as an experiment, which saw much success.

• On TED.com there are currently 2500 talks, with more added every day.

• On TED’s official TEDx YouTube channel there are currently over 90,000 talks.

• To attend a live TED conference you need to be a member, which cost $8500 per year.

• On the other hand, to watch them from the comfort of your own home COSTS NOTHING!

1. Be there for your child, listen and never shout
Páll Ólafsson (15min 11sec)

I can’t tell you how much I love this Ted Talk- I love, love, love it!

It surprised me because it isn’t often that I listen to men speak about parenting but Pall literally had me sobbing within minutes.

I don’t even know why.

He goes totally against the grain when it comes to parenting suggestions.

Just the idea of never shouting sounded crazy to me when I read the title of this TED Talk but he speaks the truth and has the ability to change the view you treat your kids forever with his words.

2. Responsible parenting: Create memories, not expectations

Austeja Landsbergiene (15min 34sec)

The subtitle of this Ted Talk says it all – create memories, not expectations.

One of this speaker’s questions literally sent a shiver of goose-bumps down my arms when I heard it– what kind of memories do you want to create for your child?

Her simple yet incredibly wise observation is that kindness is what makes our children feel loved and not the number of activities we take our kids to after school.

She also asks: how are your words impacting your children?

This clip will potentially stab you in the heart and hurt with regret at past mistakes but it is essential viewing.

3. How to Get Your Kids to Listen and Engage

Kris Prochaska (10min 24sec)

This was another Ted Talk that delivers material that I totally didn’t expect and changed me irrevocably as a result of watching it.

This speaker questions how we treat our children as equals and asks: “What if you saw your child as equal to you in their capacity for creativity, intuition and intelligence even if it is not yet fully formed.

This is one you really need to see as words cannot fully describe how powerful this clip is.

Ranbir Puar (17min 42sec)

It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.

Wow, when I heard this quote again I was reminded of the importance of our role as parents.

This is yet another gut-wrenchingly raw and powerful talk on the importance of raising confident and resilient children.

Jennifer Nacif (12min 27sec)

This speaker promises you that by the end of her talk you will know exactly how to motivate your child.

I thought this was a massive claim but she delivers on this promise in such an imaginative and informative way.

Another eye-opener that ultimately changed the way I parent my children.
