Work/Life Balance – 7 Tips To Create Perfect Balance In Life

Want a better work/life balance? Here are the 7 best tips to ditch stress and create the perfect work life balance.

Let’s chat about work/life balance.

People speak about finding a balance all the time because they know that finding a work-life balance is good for both your physical and mental health.

But too often, heavy job responsibilities tend to steal that balance away or tip it in a way that makes everything else start to collapse.

When that happens – when the balance is so out of whack – both our work and home life can suffer as a result.

So, how can you achieve that balance and still excel at your job?

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

Use these strategies to create the work-life balance you crave:

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

1 – Avoid checking your work emails outside the office.

While in the office, you’ll probably check your work emails often (SUPER OFTEN!) to ensure that you don’t miss anything and that all meetings and deadlines are met.

However, checking them when you’re off work allows your work life to encroach on your home life.

Don’t do it!

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

  • You need to set boundaries with yourself and your work colleagues regarding emails, so that you can take care of work communications only while at work. I mastered this when I worked in an office by never adding my work emails to my cell phone.

  • So, if I wasn’t at work, it was impossible for me to check. FYI: Nothing was really ever that urgent that it couldn’t wait until I was in again (and if it was, they could always contact reception)

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

2 – Learn to say no.

You may love your job, but it’s usually unnecessary to be available to your boss 24/7.

You don’t get paid enough to work around the clock my friend.

We all need a break occasionally, and there is nothing wrong with saying no once in a while.

Especially when it’s outside of your allotted work hours (but I’m sure that much is obvious).

3 – Work smarter, not harder.

My goal has always been to work smarter not just harder.

So, instead of working all hours of the day, with very little rest, see if you can find a way to work more productively and smarter.

The biggest payoff is you’ll actually get more done in a shorter period of time.

  • Prioritize important tasks and do these tasks first each day.

  • This way, the most important things always get done. My new favorite quote (based on the EAT THE FROG FIRST metaphor) is this: if you have to eat sh#t, don’t nibble!)

  • Make sure to avoid unproductive activities, such as unstructured meetings or constantly checking your social media accounts. This is not only a massive time suck but it wastes your energy and destroys your focus.

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

4 – Leave work at work.

This may be hard, and may not always be possible, but when you clock off for the day, make a mental note that work has finished.

I REPEAT – YOUR WORK IS DONE FOR THE DAY!

  • Perhaps take a moment to acknowledge that work has finished by stopping and taking a breath before your commute home.

  • The reason for this is to ensure that you are not bringing the work and any stress associated with it home. This takes practice but by gosh it feels good not to have to worry about work when you are at home.

5 – You don’t need to be perfect.

Have you ever been on your way out of the office, only to turn back around because you thought of a way to make a report or task perfect?

Sometimes, it pays to remind yourself that you and your work are good enough.

It doesn’t need to be perfect.

Trust that you did your job well (as you always do!)

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

6 – Focus on things outside work.

For some of us, our work is our life, but it’s also important to have a life outside of work.

What else brings you joy?

What else makes you feel happy?

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

How do you rest?

How do you provide value and service to this world, outside of your work environment?

One day you may not be working in the same job, therefore it’s important not to have your whole identity tied into that one thing.

You are MORE than just your work.

You are MORE.

  • Develop some hobbies that interest you. Spending time doing something that you love reduces stress and energizes you while relaxing you and uplifting your mood. Add some “happy time” to your life, that gives you a break from your work.

WORK/LIFE BALANCE

7 – Make your own rules.

Over the last few years, there has been a shift in work attitudes, especially among younger workers.

More people – even bosses – are recognizing the value of work-life balance (yay for that!)

Do you best to come up with your own ideas that will help you separate your work from your home life and if you like, run them by your boss.

They might just agree with you!

All in all, finding a balance between your work and home life can take a little juggling, but it’s well worth the effort!

First and foremost, remember not to try to juggle too many balls.

It is impossible to juggle more than a few with ease (unless you are an expert juggler) so focus on keeping only the most important ones in the air – the others can wait their turn.

You can do it!

Much love and best of luck xx
