Pros And Cons Of Working From Home – What You Need To Know

Thinking of working at home? Here are the pros and cons of working from home you need to know before you ditch your day job.

Let’s chat about the pros and cons of working from home.

Shall I start with the not-so-great news?

Working for yourself at home isn’t always a bed of roses.

I know there’s this general impression that working from home, getting to stay in your PJs all day,  is a massive privilege (and it is at times!) but sometimes there are disadvantages too.

And it’s up to you to determine whether the plusses outweigh the minuses.

The best way to do this is to consider in advance the pros and cons of working for yourself so that you can be realistic about what you’re getting yourself into.

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

Let’s start with the CONS

* Work and Home Life Often Collide

For starters, it can a little be tricky when your bedroom, kitchen, laundry, and office (if you’re lucky enough to have a designated office space) are all within meters of each other.

Honestly, it is so, so easy to be distracted in such a scenario. Trust me, I speak from experience.

As a result of working from home, your work and home life also often collide.

This is especially true if there isn’t a clear delineation of work versus time off.

You will also find yourself sometimes working odd hours to accommodate the needs of your family; thus feeling as if you never have a day off (not fun either!).

* You’ll Do a Lot of Work for Free

Let’s be honest – in the beginning, much of the work you do for your business is often not billable, therefore it will feel like you are working for free until you start making a profit.

I know, I know, it can be hard to stay motivated to do things that aren’t producing income right now, but keep at it, stay focused and have faith until your business is finally running smoothly.

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* Family Will Ask You to Do Stuff (since you’re not doing anything apparently)

it isn’t just your family that may fall prey to this behavior. Sometimes your friends too will start to depend on you being there for them for everything.

Many people will assume because you are at home that you aren’t really working! (I get that all the time, when that couldn’t be further from the truth!)

Your spouse and children may also think the lines are blurred when you are ALWAYS at home.

They may even stop helping out around the house as much, since you’re there anyway. That assumption honestly sucks!

* You’ll Crave Being out of the House

As much as working from home is great, at times it can feel like a jail cell.

Yep, it’s true. Sometimes, when you go out, you feel as if you have temporarily escaped a dungeon and entered the real world!

Even grocery shopping starts to feel like a real honor.

I didn’t realize how much I would miss the daily live interactions with other real life humans in an office space until I was working at home.

You will also miss the fact that there are no set breaks anymore because…

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* Stuff Will Distract You

Without supervision, even the most focused and organized individual can occasionally go off the rails due to the internet, television and stuff that is around to distract you from work.

It can be hard to avoid these distractions. It’s up to you and only you to set up a good working schedule to help you avoid this.

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

Now Let’s Talk About The PROS:

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* No More Living by the Clock

If you arrange your business right, you can wake up and get to work whenever your body and mind are actually ready to work.

If you need to take a day off, you can take it.

When your child is sick, you don’t have to worry about arranging a sitter or day off from the office.

You can also go to bed when you want to as well.

It’s true freedom to live by your own schedule, instead of one dedicated by the clock.

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* No More Traffic Jams

One of the best perks is not having to be caught in a traffic jam during rush hour.

You won’t have to do that anymore (any crazy travelling!) and it will be such a relief, especially on bad weather days when everyone else has to trudge through the heavy snow, rain or a heat wave.

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* Fewer Work-Related Interruptions

Office chatter can get overwhelming at times and it can be difficult to get work done due to it.

Not to mention office meetings. Be honest, did you ever really get work done due to a meeting? No more wasting time on the crappy stuff!

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* You Really Can Work in Your PJs

Oh yes you can. You can wear PJs, yoga pants, or anything you want; no one cares. You can even get inspired right out of the shower and work naked if you want to. It’s your business and your house. You get to do and wear whatever you want!

PROS AND CONS OF WORKING FROM HOME

* A Flexible Schedule

If you have a parent-teacher meeting you don’t have to ask permission to go.

If you want to get your hair done, you can book it for whatever time you like.

Whatever you want to do during the day is up to you as long as you find time to also get your work done so you can get paid.

Your schedule is your own. That freedom feels AMAZING!

* You Can Eat Healthier

Going out to work often = paid lunches five days a week. That can not only be super expensive, but it is also pretty unhealthy.

Now you can prepare healthy lunches for yourself or eat leftovers from dinner the night before. Anything you want. Save money, and save your body from junk food at the same time. Win, win!

You can also squeeze in some exercise whenever you like during the day (another added bonus).

IN THE END

As you can see, working from home can offer you many benefits and even a few drawbacks.

Ultimately it’s up to you to determine if you have the personality for it. I know I do – I love it!

You’ll just to need to rein in family and friends, make it clear that others understand you are running a business from home, create respectful boundaries, stay focused and do whatever you need to do to create a healthy and profitable home business.

It is definitely possible!
