DAY 2 CHALLENGE
STOP COMPLAINING (AND SHOW GRATITUDE INSTEAD)
Welcome my friend to Day 2 of The Reinvention Formula Challenge. In this 3 Day Challenge, I’ll be sharing with you three simple challenges that have been specifically chosen to help you create a really strong, solid foundation from which you can then begin to completely reinvent your life – one baby step at a time.
Yesterday your challenge was to limit or dial back your social media consumption to 15 min max on that day.
This first challenge was specifically chosen because it’s the simplest way to show you how to take back your time in life – time that is better spent on you and your goals.
So how did you go with the challenge? Was it easier or harder than you expected it to be?
Did you experience any withdrawals from your phone or did you find it totally freeing to just decide: that’s it, I’m refusing to waste my time like that, at least for today? I’m also curious as to what your game plan was for actioning this challenge.
Did you just delete the Instagram and Facebook apps off your phone, which is something I do whenever I’m being super precious about my time. Did you set a timer? Did you put your phone to charge in a room on the other side of the house? I know for me, out of sight is always out of mind.
Before we dive into the next challenge, I want you to do a quick little debrief – which I encourage you to do regularly in your life. After each challenge, it’s important that you evaluate your experience. What’s the approach you took and was it a good one?
What worked, what didn’t work and what will you do differently next time?
If you decided not to do the first challenge, what made you choose to ignore it? Did you think it was too hard? Or did you think it sounded good in theory but you couldn’t be bothered putting it into practice?
If you couldn’t be bothered doing it, how else does this show up in your own life? What other things can’t you be bothered doing?

REINVENTING YOURSELF
I want you to ask yourself these questions with zero judgement and 100% compassion because so many of us say that we WANT to change, but when it comes to actually doing the work, it’s obvious that our goals are just wishes. Like castles built in the air, there’s no strong foundation to hold them up.
But here’s the cool thing…if you fluffed up day 1, it’s okay! You can always go back and start again.
In fact, every time you stumble in life…and I want to remind you that you will probably stumble many times along the way because you’re a human with a human brain…you always have the option of picking yourself back up again.
Remember you aren’t doing these challenge tasks for me…you’re doing them for you. FOR YOU my friend! I want you to celebrate your wins, even the small wins. Maybe you didn’t get your social media usage down to 15 mins yesterday but you were conscious of the time you were spending there and clocked in 75 minutes rather than your usual 2 or 3 hours. If that’s the case for you, great work! Remember baby steps are the secret to success.
That being said…let’s talk about the 2nd challenge for The Reinvention Formula. For the day ahead I want you to do your best to STOP COMPLAINING AND SHOW GRATITUDE INSTEAD.
In case you’re wondering what constitutes complaining, it’s when you make a comment or statement about how something is unsatisfactory or unacceptable to you.
You know the vibe, right? It’s a little negative and pessimistic and involves constantly looking for and highlighting the faults and flaws in things, rather than choosing to see them in a more loving and level-headed way.
Before I explain to you why I’ve chosen complaining for this Reinvention Formula challenge, take a moment to consider the following quotes:
The first is by Robert Tew who so wisely said: complaining is a complete waste of one’s energy. Those who complain the most accomplish the least.
The second is by Theodore Roosevelt who noted: Complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining.
The third is by Zig Ziglar who said: Be grateful for what you have and stop complaining – it bores everybody else, does you no good, and doesn’t solve any problems.
And I’ll end with one final quote: Never waste a second of your life complaining. Complaining doesn’t solve problems, it attracts them. The more you complain, the more problems you’ll have. And the more you infect other people with your problems. Don’t be an infection. Be a cure.

REINVENTING YOURSELF
The reason I’m challenging you to stop complaining for just one day is because when you focus on all the things that are wrong in your life, it’s hard to pinpoint all the ways you are actually blessed.
More importantly, for you to reinvent yourself and show up each day in a way you love, you will need to shift your perspective away from playing the role of a victim where bad things are always happening to you and take 100% ownership of your life.
Because here’s the thing….life is 50/50. You will have good days and bad days, experience ups and downs, face challenges and obstacles…all of us will because that is just part of the human experience.
REINVENTING YOURSELF
But you get to decide how you show up in these moments.
The question is how do you want to show up? Is it with grace and love and compassion and strength or do you want to show up with negativity and a crappy defeatist attitude? I mean, you get to decide here.
One of my favorite quotes is “you’re either part of the problem or part of the solution.” This is where I have to say complaining with zero intention to make it right and no brainstorming to help improve the situation – that makes you part of the problem.

REINVENTING YOURSELF
Note: the goal is not to resist negative emotion if you face a situation you don’t like. Things may pop up for you EVERY SINGLE DAY that really tests you but I want you to know that you get to decide what you think about the situation.
Remember people can’t make you angry or stressed or frustrated. Your feelings of anger and stress and frustration come from the specific thoughts you’re choosing to think about the situation.
FYI: You get to think whatever you want to think about the world around you.
You can think: today I refuse to let other people’s bad attitudes impact me. Today I will do my best to be kind even when other people are behaving in ways I consider to be rude.
I’ll be kind and forgiving anyway. I’ll do my best to understand that people are simply doing the best they can in life, with the tools and resources they have at their disposal.
People are allowed to experience negative emotions too. I’ll give others the benefit of the doubt today because I get to decide how I show up in these moments.
I also want to point out that there’s a difference between complaining and venting or talking through an issue with the goal to resolve the conflict.
When you vent, you state your dilemma and the main feelings that it brings up in you. You get it all out and then you consider: how can I improve the situation?

REINVENTING YOURSELF
Is there potentially a lesson to be learned here? What are the possible solutions to your problem? What would your future best self tell you to do right now? What will you decide to do moving forward?
The goal of venting is to let it all out until you feel calmer inside and are filled with a sense of internal peace. You keep going until you feel like you have released all the negative energy from your body.
Just a little tip here: if you feel the need to vent today and are worried it might cross over to complaining, DO IT IN YOUR JOURNAL OR ONTO SCRAP PAPER. I promise you, once you get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper, the solution to your problem will quickly become evident.
Now just a head’s up: this challenge might be testing for you, especially if you’re used to complaining to your friends and family about how stressed and busy you are. But for one day, we’re going to put a pin in it.

Remember the old fashioned advice: if you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all.
Even better, I recommend walking around today with an attitude of gratitude. Every time you feel tempted to complain, immediately switch your focus to what you have to be thankful for.
Do you have food to eat, a bed to sleep in, clean water to drink? Lucky you…there are plenty of people in this world who aren’t blessed with those things. Can you see? Can you hear? Can you walk? Are you free from pain? Can you think for yourself? Do you have the power of choice? Once again, there are people who would DO ANYTHING to be able to say yes to those things too.
It’s harder to complain about your life when you’re too busy focusing on all the things you are grateful for.
REINVENTING YOURSELF
So that’s your challenge today: do your best to stop complaining and opt for gratitude instead. Do you think you can do that for just 24 hours?
While the first part of THE REINVENTION FORMULA helped you take back your precious time, this second challenge is all about helping you shift your attitude away from victim mode and into “I’m the boss of my own life” mode instead.
Just remember my secret tip for making this challenge a little easier for you today. Every time you feel tempted to complain, I want you to turn to gratitude instead.
For as Melody Beattie so wisely said: “Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
So are you up for the challenge? 24 hours only – no complaining and shift to gratitude instead.
I know you’re fully capable of doing it but the real question is: are you willing to step up to the plate when your name is called and see where this particular task takes you?
I hope you are. I’m calling your name now. This is the second baby step to reinventing your life and if you want change, it’s time to press play and give it a go.
I wish you the best of luck with this second challenge and I can’t wait to catch you on Day 3 of The Reinvention Formula Challenge.
