Toddler Training Potty – My Daughter Freak Of Nature

Let’s chat about toddler training potty? Here’s how my 18 month old toddler was toilet trained with ease – toilet training secrets!

When my daughter was eighteen months old, she decided she didn’t want to wear nappies anymore.

Instead she wanted to wear undies just like her older cousin who was 4.

I spoke to the baby nurse and she said to me:

I think she’s ready for toilet training.

What the…?

I was seriously gobsmacked.

It was a mouth drop mommy moment for me.

The idea of toilet-training an eighteen month old had honestly never crossed my mind.

Nonetheless, I entertained the idea for a few days.

I bought my daughter some cute little undies that were practically falling off her tiny body.

I made sure she had a few potty options around the home.

I even purchased a special portable seat that we could take with us when we were outside the home.

I continued to humor her successful toilet-training efforts until the weekend when it was time to go to the shops.

I insisted she wear nappies to the shops “just in case”.

She didn’t want to wear nappies “just in case”.

Mean mommy won this little war because I still couldn’t fathom the fact that I had an 18 month old who was potentially going to be out of nappies soon.

Fast forward a couple of hours and we were both now at my favorite store which was coincidentally closing down that weekend.

Everything in the store is 90% off.

I felt like I was in heaven.

I sat her in the biggest trolley I could find and began to fill it with everything I wanted to buy.

Did I mention it was all 90% off?

It was mayhem in the store.

Hands were everywhere.

Shelves were being emptied.

Then about fifteen minutes into this shopping frenzy my daughter said to me:

I need toilet.

I felt a wave of relief that I was smart enough to put a nappy on her before I left.

I reminded her:

You have a nappy on. It’s okay!

I kept on adding things to my trolley.

To this day this is still the biggest, most crazy sale I have had the good fortune of attending.

Did I mention that it was all 90% off?

Another twenty minutes passed and my trolley was now almost overflowing.

Stuff was crowded around my daughter, who was now looking rather pissed off.

“I need toilet!” She said again, this time louder.

I was seriously confused.

What? I thought she had gone in her nappy fifteen minutes before. She was STILL holding on?

“TOILET NOW!” she insisted.

And I knew then that I had no choice.

I would have to take her to the bathroom NOW.

I would have to leave the sale.

I would have to abandon my trolley filled with all this freaking great stuff that I LOVE (all now 90% off, sob) and leave it to be ravaged by the scavengers around me.

I wanted to cry.

Tears of frustration.

Tears of shock too that this toilet training thing was apparently actually happening.

I was about to have a fully toilet-trained eighteen month old toddler.

No thanks to me…of course.

The moral of the story:

Sometimes your kids will do things that make you look really good (like wow, a toilet trained 18 month old), that really – you had nothing to do with.

And sometimes your kids will do things that make you look not-so-great (tantrums, bad grades, teen attitude etc etc), that once again you had nothing to do with.

In both situations, you will eventually discover that your kids really are their own individual person.

They have their own thoughts and feelings.

They have their own unique personality, quirks and desires.

Your influence over your child only goes so far and then they take over.

Not only at age 18 but at eighteen months too.

Welcome to life raising humans who were all born with free will.

As always, much love from me and take care.

Much love,

Frances Vidakovic
